15inch would be too big unless you sacrifice your spear wheel space. Mine running a 12inch JBL and the box has an internal volume of 3cu.ft, with a 3 inch x 13inch port (firing to the side) which gives the best out of car responce and a resonant freqency of 40hz and the harmonics thereof ! (note you want the best out of car responce because with the roof down you are technically out of the car if the sub is housed in a closed boot.)

as you can see to make the box fit under the rear hood storage box i had to angle the sub, this was already a tight fit, but i still have enough space in my boot for a few bits and pieces, now imagine trying to put a 15inch sub in there!!! It would take over the whole boot.

you will also find the biggest proplem is venting the boot, bmw made it a good seal so air cannot escape easliy, i removed all the rubber bungs in the base of the roof storage space, and cut holes in the carpet underneath, i also removed the carpet between the boot and the rear seat. this allow it to breath a bit easier. i am toying with cutting holes down in the battery box area to allow air to get out through the two holes behind the bumper, but water may be a problem in uk if you do this.

things to bear in mind when you make your box.
1. seal it well with silicone
2. dont forget you may need to get to the spare wheel, so it should be removable
3. when you calculate the internal volume of the box dont forget the speaker itself will fill space and hence rob you of volume inside the box
4. in my cab i used the rear demister/heater thing as a power source for my amp, i dont use it and it is a good supply with a large fuse. remove the rear seat back and you will see the blower, disconnect, and connect the supply for your amp, the open the roof cover and find the microswitch under the roof frame on the LHS of the car, disconnect the wires and short them out.

then you can turn on and off your sub using your rear demister switch on the dash! very handy in dodgy areas winkeye

heres me box..

Forget about all this "You may need to use your spare wheel stuff" That's what the AA is there for winkeye Chop off the spare wheel holder, have it welded and build yourself a proper system. Bangs like thunder whether the roof is down or not and looks the dogs dangleis too :D

Some of the Pioneers ones are fantastic as well. I asked them to sponsor me and they said yes. I got the prices for the list of things i wanted and i could buy them cheaper on the net than what they were offering it to me for :D

cant argue with JL.... tbh depends on what kind of sound you are after....

quality.... quantity,,, bit of both....

depending on your amp,,, and pocket,, yo ucan get some very nice kit....

if you like wibbly wabbly bass,,, IDmax, PBX, to name a few... quality bass,,, some of the MTX range, Re XXX (VERY FOOKING GOOD SUBS can do both quality and high quantity)

and u got the usual suspects,, alpine, jl, etc..

though if you are tight on boot space and want a lot of kick for minimal size,,, try passive radiators..... wish i could demonstrate these,,, 0.5cu ft box,,,, 1 sub and 1 passive (looks like a sub with no motor) the passive acts as a port, honesly uses 400 watts at 4 ohm,,, and hell its an EXCELLENT SQ sub, as well as alot of low down bass, but because its sealed as well... good sq and punch... best of everything!!! ive seen these demoed,,, and they are brill... i will be getting some of these myself... i am organising a bulk buy .... normally 300 for the sub and passive combination,,,, if i get 10 orders of either 10" or 12" sub passive combos then price goes to 175.... running one 10" passive combo,,,, u can get the feeling of 2 10" punching,, or 2 12" low down... honestly brilliant stuff...

so far got 4 combos going,, 6 more spaces to fill... at 175,, its a steal... (and no,,, i am not a distributer or seller... just very keen on getting my set at that price!!)

2 sets look like 4 subs,,, and u only use 1 cu ft to run it off ;)

sorry just re read,,, ur amp.... 1000 watts at 2ohm iirc (at 14.4v)

running two sets of passives on parrelel will equate to 2 ohm,,,, will demand 400watts (though better with 600 tbh) so thats well matched as well.....

sorry will stop pimping now... just their not very well known,, so thouht ill enlighten thats all..

A 12 is fine in a tin top car but in a cab they get a little lost,
where as a 15 just seams to make that bit more noise.

I sold my W7 to a guy with a cab and trust me, there are very few subs, regardless of size that can make more noise!

I know what you mean tho, most 'normal' 12's are lacking in really deep bass and would not be great for a cab. Just thought id suggest an alternative if you cant get a 15" in there.

a 12" RE XXX will defo do you better tbh...

one of the best regarded subs on the market..

takes huge wattage at ease,,, and the sound quality is brilliant...

it is more to do with enclosure build as to what your system sounds like...

assuming u want low bass... get a 12" in a largest ported box vs a 15" in the same box,., the 12" will outperform on the low notes... if u got a 15" sealed box,,, the 12" in a ported box will still outperform on low notes... if its not low otes your after then getting a 15" is pointless as it will be even worse, they arnt really good for punchy bass...

a correctly built box Sealed or ported 12" RE XXX will outperform in terms of quality and quantity most 15" subs and even a 15" RE xxx if its not in the right box...

though mind you,, ur amp wont get much out of a RE XXX

if still confused a little... ask on talk audio.,,. alot of the people on there are genuine audio enthusiasts... im sure they will point u in the right diorection :)

lol agreed. i was running 2 alpine type R 12" subs in the beginning... no doubt the JL sub is very good...

the alpines compared to most ar enot very bassy.... they a good "budget" sub ...

ive seen some mentalist 10" subs which can do very very well indeed. jsut dpends what kind of bass your after....

deep down low bass,,,, or punchy fast bass...
streetbass, or SQ bass....

alot of variation...

Why not just try the 2 jlw3's in a ported box?

Cheapest solution.

Bandpass is a bad idea if you don't know what your doing.

Porting generally makes it sound deeper. If you've got the cash and a total of 1000wrms you could get another two jl's and put them on top of the subs you already have then port the box. In case you don't know it's called isobaric loading and halves the box size you'll need. I also think it makes the sound alot more tighter and punchy aswell as deep, I suppose I should say that it's a very controlled sound but still goes deep. I'm thinking about doing it for the 3rd time now.

3 10's a the mo.

I'm still planning the system at the minute. I'm considering taking the rear seats out and putting 3 15's in behind the front seats.

Other than that I might do what I told you to do.

I'm currrently using some Soundstream 6.5" components. They are just some of the cheaper ones.

I will be upgrading soon though, possibly to two sets of 6.5" in each door. I just weighing up my options at the moment.

What do you think to the isobaric idea?

i also have a jl 12W7 going into a cab. I have full faith in it because I know what it can do. I had it in my type r and it was unbelieveable. the bass it gives is just totally on another level. the bass sounds more pure if that makes sense !
