Just thinking out loud here, want to start collecting bits for the turbo conversion over summer and with an impending sale of my KTM it will free up some folding.
Looking through a few m5x based turbo builds I see a few people have used the Miller War chip with good success. Here's a link to the kit:
https://www.millerperformancecars.com/s ... s5x-detail
Seems very good value considering it comes with injectors. So what does everyone think? Anyone have any experience? I would prefer to go MAP based, but the kit has some benefits for me, namely the base tune as I am really going to struggle with getting the car anywhere for mapping due to my location.

Had a little read and saw this

I too wouldn't mind knowing if this is any good also because that would save me a load of time and money.
Only flaw is I wouldn't mind doing away with the MAF and have a 3bar MAP sensor.
Sorry for the no help post ross

More than 18 psi?
Would you be better with some standalone you can self tune, iirc you can do that with Megasquirt.

Missed that bit, stopped reading at the 250whp part. Could be an option, but I think the Miller is user adjustable. If I was on the mainland I would be more inclined to go full standalone but lack of a tuner over here is a problem. Plus I have no idea how to wire in VEMS/Megasquirt
No days cars can be remotely mapped...ross_jsy wrote:Missed that bit, stopped reading at the 250whp part. Could be an option, but I think the Miller is user adjustable. You can email maps etc. I know a guy who remotely maps cars all over the world and he has got a very good reputation.
To get the best standalone is the only way.

You can map cars on the road, although not easy. Holding revs etc. But it's how the cars used, not on a dyno.
The guy I know was adjusting the map on a drag car in New Zealand. The car was doing a run, he would analyze the data. Tweek the map and he would email it for the next run.

Hi how's it going, I did a bits reading and went for the miller war chip and injectors. Not got it on car as yet as still collecting parts for build.
The war chip is essentially a fully mappable ecu much like mega squirt.
It is very popular in the states. What attracted me was just swopping out the old chip within ecu, a USB port is plugged into chip and pops out of side of casing so you can plug in laptop for tuning. Saves a heap of wiring using the standard loom!!
Miller will also send you maps and tweak a map for you if you send them the data.

I emailed them asking about compatibility and it won't work with a non Vanos as apparently the electronics are non upgradable. It would need to be converted to a TU loom.
What's the score with standalone? I'm fairly inept when it comes to electronics, is wiring one in simple?

Problem with Map only is the low RPM drivability and response, simply the commercially available MAP sensors are not sensitive enough at low pressures.
You would have to run MAF/MAP or AlphaN/MAP.
I really like the look of the Miller WAR chip, what a great idea and I have considered it a few times, how ever, I really would like a little more sophistication, CAN, Knock Control, Data logging etc.

In case it interests anyone, I emailed Megasquirt about the possibility of a plug and play kit for 88 pin motronic and it's something they are looking into but are having problems finding a case large enough to house the connector

Just stumbled upon this, not sure how I haven't found it before now. Like the idea of VEMS, seems very well priced for what you get and Craig seems to have had really good results:

Have sent an inquiry

I've joined bimmerforums as they have a good boosted section and this has been recommended:
http://www.rktunes.com/tunes/m5x-s5x-obd-i-turbo-tune
While I don't really want a MAF based system, since I am having problems finding a way of mapping the car it might be an option

I've decided to go down the route of standalone, probably VEMS. But life has got in the way, have an engine to build and zero hours due to the start of a fairly tough degree.
Going to try and get a load done over the Christmas break providing my revision timetable isn't too full on. How do the youth manage uni and busy drinking lives?!

I'm going to stick with the Miller setup as i have the 24lb injectors, war chip and maf. I know the feeling of not having the time.
I wish I went to uni when I was younger. Lol
My goal is to get mine perfect for next summer. Let's see.
