What's this likely to be any ideas? I'm hugely tempted for a family barge - unfortunately I'm not in Cambridge anymore!!

If this was an E30, the first reply would be "check that a handbrake shoe retaining pin hasn't pulled through the backplate." The E39 design is very similar to an E30.

Thinking about it I had exactly the same problem on mine, the brake back plate had fractured around the retaining bolt, and moved forward onto the disc. A couple of repair washers later and its good for another 20 years :D

It will go to around 1400 I reckon, the B30 is one of the best engines to have in these, especially when coupled to a manual box

So it is! My brain read rear the first time I looked at the ad!
As above, it'll be the aluminium backplate on the front hub, they corrode at the mounting points (why that funny small headed bolt??) and touch the rotating hub, making a racket out of all proportion to what you find when you investigate.
Aluminium penny washers provide a repair.

the 3.0 autos are fast still so a manual one probably goes even better plus you might get a bit more economy out of it!

5 speed only these were?
