It's been a month and a half.

The sunroof cable that I had ordered had a small plastic bit broken in shipping, so the guy fixing it machined it in metal and it's come together.

Image

The sunroof is fitted and works.

Wind deflector. Reverse lift. Down and slide back.

So it is a rough fitting to check mechanism, the body shop sorted out the alignment and gaps. Don't have pictures of that.

On to painting now. Probably will start next week.

Epic work here mate. One thing I know about Indian mechanics is that they'll fab pretty much anything to get it going!

This'll be sweet once you've sorted it, frustratingly I guess you pay more for shipping than you do for actual parts..... :?

Yes, I've certainly over spent if I look at purchase price and all the parts I've changed.
But I guess childhood dreams have no price attached.

Will be putting up more pics tonight as soon as I've uploaded them to Photobucket.

This is exactly how most people justify owning an E30!

My turd has no provenance, it began life as a 318i, now has a Tech 2 kit and is running an 318is engine....but I love driving it, especially as my main vehicle is a Transit van! Look forward to seeing more progress!

I take my hat off to you mate, you really show what's possible when you have the skill and above all the determination to get things done. The sunroof rebuild was epic. Keep the pics / updates going. I think the Zone should come up with an award for "Triumph in the face of Adversity" which you would win hands down

My father-in-law is a puzzled man. And obviously a non car person.
For him it's transport and he's just been asking 'why'? 'And what's so special?'

My father just shakes his head and suggests all the possible Jap cars I could have bought by now a˜‚

Moved the car to an ex-Mercedes workshop after many irritating conversations with my friend who was helping me.

I admit, he sure has saved me a lot of moolah by guiding me to the cheap, work-out-of-a-vacant-plots kind of mechanics and welders that you have seen in action so far.

But it was time BLB 0115 deserved better treatment, especially since the Monsoon has hit Mumbai with a vengeance and couldn't leave it with the roadside mechanics anymore.

The new place is used to caring for old cars and being ex-Mercedes, is very well equipped.

Need the rubber coupler to the prop shaft and a new accelerator cable quickly. Any suggestions?

I'm surprised no one said you put your AC switch backwards! (Snow Flake goes on top). WOW at this build, I'm happy I read threw it. I've never seen a build quite like this. Seeing cars like this makes me wonder why people sell there snapped timing belt cars to my local junk yard for $250 USD. There ALL rust free where I am (California) but I guess theres so many around my area that they just throw these things away like trash.

Great progress my friend, Keep It Up!

I got a chance of a lifetime and was driving all around USA for 3 months with my college friend.

Was in NY/NJ area for 3 weeks and about the same in SFO too, amongst many other cities. Managed to get hold of a complete tool kit off someone in California. Very steep at $110 but it's ok I guess.

Met Boomerm20 in NY and he was of great help. Helped me source a new centre console, rubber for all doors and windscreens, B-Pillar trims, seat belts, a coin box, a mirror motor, and boot/bonnet logos.
A tip of the non-existent hat. God bless.

And a tip of the hat to Virgin Atlantic too, they didn't charge me extra baggage even though I was clearly carrying over limit and oversized parts. :)

Meanwhile, there has been a lot of work done on the car.

Drove it for 80 km and gave it back to the workshop to fix the parts.

Details and pics to follow.

The debate between the garage owner, the sunroof fellow and the guy who had done the tin work raged on.
Should we fine tune the sunroof or should we finish the paint and then fine tune.
Everyone I think had had enough and wanted out as soon as possible.

The decision was to paint so off we went to the paint shop while the car was back at the garage still misfiring as the "let's do that later' boys had refused to change the HT leads, the engine mounts and the spark plugs.
I was hoping that nothing went (more) wrong as we drove it back and forth clanking and shuddering.

I discovered while enquiring about the next steps, that the grinder had got stolen, and when I learnt that the guys were going to try and work the weld spots by hand, I put my foot down and insisted that they borrow a grinder from somewhere.

I missed that part of the job on a Saturday morning, as he had finished grinding. Couldn't get any pictures and more importantly, proof that it was done properly.

All the cutting and welding had by now developed massive amounts of rust, and I wanted them to clean the metal before they cover it with paint as I had seen you all do it.

I'm sure that is how its done even here, but had to make sure they don't take any shortcuts.

Image

Meanwhile at the Duco outlet, I was glad that my demand for 086 colour code was answered with a prompt yes.

We decided to paint only the parts where we had worked on and leave the original paint elsewhere as is.

Discovered that the rear seats had no slots for the belts! They had happily covered them up, citing that what's the point anyway who uses rear seat belts

Loaded the seat back into my trusty Corolla and back to the seat cover factory 20kms away.
Was a 10 min job, but worth the effort.

A week later, while browsing through OLX, chanced upon these for sale in Bangalore, about 850 km away.

Image

Some JRD of Germany, 15x6.5, would need spacers I suppose to make it 15x7

Image

Image

5 alloys for Rs22,000 plus shipping.
Image

A friend went to pick them up, bargained for them just because he thought he shouldn't let a chance to bargain go, and reduced the price to Rs20,000 and packed them carefully via his office boy and sent them off to Mumbai.

Image

They are not BBS cross spokes, but will do for now.

End of March 2014, got a chance to visit Kuwait for a week.

Image

Was lucky to be passing by when these oldies, the drivers as well as their cars, had decided to meet and do a Sunday drive.

Image

I paid a visit to the famous Cut Car market in Shuwaikh (Cars meant to be broken are cut in half and imported in shipping containers and either welded back or stripped for parts all over the Gulf region) in the hope of finding interior trim like B Pillars, seat belts, maybe even door cards.

Image

No luck, apparently all the E30s have been bought by chaps in Bahrain.

There was only one E30 that I saw there, abandoned. The rest of the complete cars for sale were newer and all at throw away prices.

Really wanted to take this Hartge home. It was complete with all badges and stickers:

Image

Chopped cars from god knows where all:

Image

Image

I was disappointed that I couldn't source any parts and even went to spare parts shops and BMW dealers but no luck.

Hand carrying the parts is the cheapest for me as I save on shipping and customs duty, and also I had no plans to travel to an E30 populated country any time soon so this was a major set back.

Back to ebay.co.uk for me :(

A couple of days later, I dragged my brother in law 130 kms into the desert that is a treasure trove of car parts. From broken down SUVs, sedans, trucks, the works, Naayem/Salmi is a car parts hell in the hot desert where temperatures reach 55 degrees C.

Entire lots are taken up by just one brand and after checking with the guys there, there were a few dismantlers who worked on BMWs. But no luck with E30 parts.

I suspect because E30s are so reliable that none come here.

Image

I suppose they love Mercs more.

Image

No alloys in 4x100 either.

Image

Kuwait is also home to junked tyres. 7 million tyres in vast fields in the desert.
There was a Daily Mail article too with some amazing pictures.

It was time for some electrical work again. The car was moved to a garage where the electrician frequented. It was an Enfield specialist who kindly lent space for my car to be worked upon.

Image

We got down to fixing all the door wiring harnesses that I had ordered from UK. The chopped and changed ones were chucked.

One of the 'new' harnesses came with a different pin. The seller had pulled a fast one and sent it without checking.

Image

The control module for the central locking was also installed and the Suzuki crap thrown.
The actuators were fitted and we awaited the replacement pin to be flown in.

Image

Got the battery into the boot.

Image

Started asking around who could make me some door cards.

The 6.5J is the width/depth of the wheel, so spacers won't make any difference to that!

While all the electrical work was happening, thought I should chuck the ancient speakers and buy some new ones.

Mirrors were sent for a bit of WD 40 and grease or whatever they do to make them stop groaning.

So now the mirrors groan a bit less, the electric antenna and the lights work. The speakers are in, and I discover that Murphy's Law catches up sooner or later.

Because he had the mirror switch upside down, the connections to the electric mirror switch was wrong, so the man happily cut and spliced the new loom before realising the mistake and then taped it up. Arrrgh!

Back at the garage, the sanding down begun and the paint was to be slapped on.

Nothing happened for a couple of weeks, the summer, while it lasted, was a good time to get things done.

I spent a month chasing various quotes for door cards. But the price of £45 for the cards and £185 for shipping made zero sense.

Friends travelling could not have carried this. This would have been a big, oversized favour.

Found a 3-D printing company to see if they could knock off a batch for me. After discussing material and checking their big 8 machine facility 15 kms away, they just didn't get back with a cost. Just avoided giving one for over a month.

Finally, my luck turned and found someone who was good with fibreglass to take up the project.

He was 90 mins away in a hole of a workshop, but i didn't mind anything at the moment.

He got the board stripped of the vinyl cover. And taped up the broken cardboard. Then managed to straighten the warped edges so that he could do the mould.

Image

After many delays, he managed to get the work over for a trial fitting. The car, with its fresh paint, was back at the Sunroof fitter's workshop as the missing sunroof cable and fitting had come from the ebay UK seller.

Image

The sunroof was fitted and trials showed that nothing was scraping and there were no marks on the new paint.

But this didn't mean that the water test had proved successful too, the impending monsoon would be a good way to find out, the hard way.

I was again travelling.

The instructions to my friend, who owns the garage and helped me so much with contacts and everything to get my work done, were very clear.

It was 31st May 2014. At best we had a 15 day window to wrap up the pending work on a war footing and get the car out of the open garages and workshops as the Monsoon was rolling in from Southern India.

There was a reason why I was panicking.

London gets about 600mm of rainfall in a year on an average.

Mumbai and especially the central parts that I live and where the garage is, gets 2457mm of rainfall on an average, and if the rain gods decide to be extra kind and give us a generous helping, then it can even be over 3400mm.

All of the 2400+ mm crashing down on us between June to September.

Four bad months ahead and I was dreading that the car was not done. The carpets had not been installed, we had to remove the Windscreen rubbers to access the stuck bits of headliner and install a new one.

And the carpet and trim fellow worked out of a small shop with a yard to park and work on the cars.

I came back to Mumbai after 12 days and discovered that the car had been jump started and driven from the sunroof fellow to the trim shop, and then they had struggled to remove the Windscreens and given up, while pigeons did their morning rituals from the ledges above the building.

The car was looking terrible with the muck all over the touched up paint, it wouldn't start, no work had been done, and they hadn't even informed me that they were stuck without the tools to remove windscreen glass.

I called a tow truck and got it towed to a Mercedes restorer. Someone I had been planning to go to for final fitting and some spit and polish, for the simple reason that they are expensive.

I borrowed a mate's Fiat Palio Adventure and loaded up my boxes of parts from my friend's garage.

Image

Picked up the carpet and headliner material from the shop and asked him to finish the work in the new workshop.

Image

The B Pillar trim was in sad shape and the trimmer had pasted cardboard to hold the limp pillars but I knew that sooner of later I would have to spend some money calling for them from eBay.

Image

At the new workshop, I spent about a week hand holding them through BMW parts and especially E30s. Gave them my copy of my Haynes Repair Manual.

We took an inventory of parts that I was handing over in the 4 boxes.

A lot of 'How To' printouts that I had gathered for the various people working on it so far.

So far since I had bought the wheels, they had been lying unopened, and that was the first thing that they attempted.

Image

I've noticed that it is a bad idea to change workshops in the middle of a rebuild. The new guys never trust what has been done before. And will try and poke holes in every aspect.

So I gave them a list of things to be done, and things that have already been tackled. We made a plan that during the week, they will tackle the chassis/suspension work, fit in the remaining bushing, during the weekends, the trim fellow will work on the liner and carpet.

Meanwhile, I had taken the black Vinyl from the chap making the fibreglass door cards and taken them to the seat factory and asked them to use the same dark 'leather' that was used on the sides of the seats so that we have one tone in the interior. We decided that the thin red stitch was ok on the seat, to replicate that on the door card stitch pattern would be too much. This wasn't an M car.

Monsoons, Ramzan, a Mercedes workshop that had never seen an E30, and confusion of where to start delayed the job by a couple of weeks. Nothing was being done on the car.

The workshop guys and the trim chaps were not getting along. I guess because I had forced them to work together. For the sake of continuity. And more importantly, for a monetary reason.

When I first towed the car over and asked for an estimate basis the pending work from the new Merc workshop, they quoted Rs 35,000 for the headliner and carpet (£350 approx), Versus Rs 11,500 (£120 approx) from the guy who was doing it.

And the Rs 11,500 was with the material!

I knew that the Merc guys were expensive. First proof of their margins came through.

Dark and gloomy.

That's how it was in Mumbai.

While nothing much happened for more than two weeks, I used this as a screen saver to keep me focussed on the goal.

After much coordinating, finally got my hands on the stitched door card covers.

They had come out as close to the real thing.

As the rains came down, I was glad to have moved it to a comparative safe location.

The Garage roof started leaking and one of the drips was on my car.

The roof trim and the carpet work proceeded in fits and starts, hampered by Ramzan fasts and ego clashes between the garage mechanics and the trim installers.

After a hunt for the missing rod holding up one end of the roof trim, they proceeded with a wet roof liner, the store room where the parts were stored had also developed a leak.

After using a heat gun for a couple of hours, they went ahead with the installation. There is 80% or more humidity around anyway. There was only so much one could have done.

Image

You can see the wet patches on the installed trim.

I'm hoping that it doesn't sag or stretch in an odd way.

The way the carpet is installed right now is the old moulded (or should I call it mouldy) carpet is the underlay. And the new material is on top.

The centre console hopefully will cover the cut in the middle.

The B Pillar on its deathbed. Its twin not too far away.

The brake servo being installed.

Image

The rear drums with the new brake cylinders had developed a leak. The garage guys were about to throw them away when I told them to have a look at the way they had been installed and check the lines. Saved from buying more in the nick of time. :D :D :D

The brake booster installed.

I hope this is the way to install a new carpet.

Please share some links how you have put in a non BMW carpet (if at all)

Don't think I will get a decent, used one in India.
