Hi all,

Basically my 5 series uses the M40 block hence why im hoping you guys can help. basically a "synchro" or something has broken on my 4th gear. So im in the middle of sourcing another m40 gearbox. Will a gearbox from a 318iS fit aswell as a normal x18i?

And has anyone got any tips on me removing this myself, ive done a headgasket etc on my old cars(so im feeling up for the challenge :P ) but never a gearbox.

Cheers Guys!

Gearboxes are easy especially on a 4-pot.

The iS gearbox will fit the "i" block, they have the same bellhousing bolt configuration.

Basically you need to undo all the bolts around the bell housing, undo the prop from the output shaft, undo the clutch slave cylinder hose, undo the selector rod then support the 'box with a jack and remove the gearbox mounts and lower it down.

I can't really think of anything you might get stuck with. If you've managed a head gasket then this should be no trouble at all.

i believe the iS box has a longer output shaft and a shorter prop is required to compensate...

stock m40 box is ure best bet

If you put on a new pressure plate it will make the clutch nice and light.

also find a 89 M40 with a lighter fly wheel if you want to ive it a little boost.
