Looking to pick up a aplina style 17 inch wheel (215/40/17) as a spare.
But just wandered if the e30's spare wheel well can accomodate this size of rim?
Vehicle isnt with me at the moment, so cant really measure it up, hence the post!

If you fit a 17" rim then you need to reduce the tyre sidewall until the overall rolling radius is the same as a 15" rim. So yes, a 17 will fit with the right tyres.

i don't plan on going lower than 40 on the sidewall.

Indeed, it should fit; I had a Peugeot 306 Cabriolet that had a 15" spare with 195/55R15 tyre and the car had 17" wheels with 40-profile tyres - the overall diameter was about the same.

Thanks for the replies people!
Another slightly off topic question! i currently have 205/40/17s on the car, and the spare I'm buying has 215/40/17....so im pressuming the rim is wider than what i have on my car?!
i'm buying the spare wheel, but the chap has a pair and the only reason id be interested in taking the pair off him is because they have good tyres on...
So i guess my question is can you run a car with one pair wider than the other?!

No, you can't. Tyre height (40) is a percentage or tyre width, so a 215/40 tyre has a bigger overall diameter than a 205/40 tyre (604mm compared to 595mm). It's an MOT failure to drive different-sized tyres across the same axle, because it'll affect your braking bias and bugger up your diff in the long run.
The metal rim itself may be exactly the same width (7.5J, at a guess) as your others, but it's the tyres that are the problem here.

Buy the two and as they have wider tyres, use them on the rear and keep one of your old ones as a spare.
I've had a 9x17 with 235 40 tyre in the spare wheel well of my e30. Made a bit of a lump in the floor under the carpet due to the width, but fitted in the hole fine.
