A welded diff is a modification, so needs to be declared on insurance. Some insurers wont accept it, others like Sky who know about drifting do accept welded diffs.

It will pass an MOT, you can tell them its welded or tell them its a 2 way LSD, either way it should be brake tested on the road and not on the rollers.

So is it easier to drift with welder or LSD ?
I have had some sideways action with the open diff on my way to work and back hanging the back out and also round Chiswick.
But I be a bit worried everyone will know is my car as there is only 1 Tech1 325i Sport in Chiswick. And only 325i Sport I think.
Someone near my road used to have Tech2 325i Sport. I always wondered whether he was on the Zone. I never met him.
But as been a few years since I have driven it just finding my feet again.

Easier with a welder, unless its a £1k 2 way LSD.
BMW LSD's are rubbish.

Brand new BMW LSD 25% is £1500
Brand new Quaife LSD is about £1500 maybe cheaper
Brand new Kaaz 2-way LSD is £800 I think
LSD must be most important part is the spec for drifting.

I had a look on drift works
A lot of people with E30s have welders, cut springs, bucket seats, harnesses etc
I have kept mine as standard as possible as I am OEM guy though I have Poweflex bushes on the rear as these last longer. I didn't realise the ride was really hard though!
I kind of like the idea of drifting in OEM spec or as close to as possible

An LSD isnt vital to drift but some kind of uprated diff is. An open diff will suck once you can hold a slide. Dont forget, getting alittle bit sideways or doing a donut isnt drifting so an open diff will do.

The reason why an LSD is so good is that at times when you put the clutch down it opens, so you can save all sorts of near spins. A welded diff is fine but as it never opens it can be abit tricky on the road if you dont know what it will do.

The key to any drifts or sideway stuff is practice. Know what the car will do and when and you`ll be fine. So go and try it out. If it all goes wrong at least you`ll make some cash from breaking your car.

Pony don't believe everything you read.

You can do donuts and hold a drift with an open diff.

All the time you've spent talking on here you could of found somewhere to practice.

Weld the diff and use the £££ you've saved from not buying an LSD to goto drift days and buy tyres!

Welder is the cheap skate option anyway I bought SH LSD and gone through the trouble of getting it rebuilt and fitted. Best part of the E30. No way woul I swap it for a welder. Anyway isn't drifting with a welder that bit easier than with LSD ?

drifting is an awesome sport to watch ...some seriously wicked prepped cars exist for this motorsport ...the v8 e30 is amongst the snailed up ricers mixing it up ...i like any motor sport apart from those time trial boffs that fook about with cones in a car park ...now that's shit!
