What did the spring look like? Have you got a picture of it?

No picture, its at home.
It just came with the housing slid over the long bolt that holds the canister on.
Fitted a new filter and if the spring goes back over the bolt like it was but it seems pointless as it just slides up and down the long bolt.
Just thought it must have a purpose

Normal arrangement in a replaceable element type filter is for a spring to sit on the centre bolt in the bottom of the can, with a large top hat washer on top of it. This seals the inside of the filter from the outside, and pushes the filter against the top of the housing.

It is quite easy to chuck the large washer/plate out with the old filter if it is stuck to it.
