i am going to need to get a stud for the manifold drilled out as some idiot has snapped it off in the head. it is the very back one near bulk head so cant get it done in situe. im just wondering what the best way to do it will be.

options

1, take full engine out and change clutch at the same time although it doresnt really need changing just thought might aswell while engine is out.

2, remove head and change head gasket at the same time.

any oppinions please

Removal of the head is bes way forwrd, however you could try a Right angle drill attatchment and have a go with it in situ, make sure and drill straight and true whichever metho you choose

I've done 20+ of these in the last few years, always worth the effort IMHO

Slight hi-jack Ant, but if you remove the head for drilling and there was no prior overheating do you still need to get it skimmed?

The same stud has snapped in mine so will be doing this later in the year :(

I've heard that they can warp during removal. I'm sure you can also get some sort of jig to line it all up to make sure you acurately drill in the right spot. I'm sure I came across something after I snapped a stud extractor inside a snapped stud I had drilled (with the head already off) while I did an internet search under 'spark erosion' which, incidentally cost Ԛ£30 at a local machine shop.

(was that the longest sentence in the world with the worst punctuation?)

provided the head and block are at least 6 hours cold there should be no issues with warping.

make sure and remove the head bolts in the correct order

if you have concerns over the head mating face, a steel rule on edge and some feeler gauges will show up any defects.

TBH I never use stud extractors, if you break one you'll never drill it

I prefer to drill the snapped studs with a 3mm pilot then open out 1mm a time up to the correct tapping size for the M8 , in alloy I use a 6.4mm drill

alternative is , assuming you have a bit of stud poking out once you've removed the manifold, is to weld a washer on its edge to the snapped stump, then while its all still warm try and remove the stud combop with some pliers

Works surprisingly well on most studs, the heat really makes the differance
