Hi guys,
I have a scraping noise coming from the rear of my car - and annoyingly I have just noticed it before I have to drive for 3 hours!
It's the exact noise that a disc-brake backing plate makes when scraping on something.. but I have drums on the rear.
Any ideas what I should check before setting off?

Can you get at that without removing the whole drum assy?

my bets a stone

This sounds like a very similar noise to what I'm experiencing here: http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?name ... c&t=250260 Number 2.
I hope to get the back end up in the air one evening this week to work out what's going on.

Back behind an M20, but now I can hear it better.

Forgot to mention I'm on discs. Keep us posted on what you find and I'll do likewise.

Just took my rear drums apart and found that one of the shoes was scraping it's edge on the inner face of the drum.

Presumably because the securing pins have gone missing?Altrezia wrote:Just took my rear drums apart and found that one of the shoes was scraping it's edge on the inner face of the drum.
If the cause is a rusted backplate, then the same kind of repair should be possible as detailed in the wiki for the handbrake mechanism on rear disc brakes.

No the pins were still there. No idea why it was touching, and I still have a scraping noise even after grinding a bit of the shoe away, but less loud :/

Shoes should be hard against the backplate, so how can they touch the drum? Warped backplate? Wrong (wider) shoes fitted?

Wrong shoes I'll guess.
They were hard against the back plate, and the back plate looked fine.
Will be swapping to discs at some point so not putting too much thought into it

If they were the wrong shoes then surely both sides would have the same symptoms and it would have started a long time ago rather than just recently?
