Yeah, you've missed the advice of loads of people telling you to take it to a mechanic because it's such a bastard of a job.

You have the driveshaft out;
You have the brake line dis-connected;
So you are just two bolts from getting the trailing arm off.
I had to give in and take the arm to a garage and let them press the old bearing out and fit the new one for me,there's no shame in admitting defeat!
Do remember to take your shiney new backplate and it's two upper fixing bolts,though,I forgot and had to cut and weld mine!

I drove down to my local garage. I asked if I could bring in the trailing arms, the not so friendley mechanic there said he was to busey doing mot's. So it's now all back together after the fourth time Iv stripped it. The hub had moved, when I put the caliper back on there was a 10mm gap. So I now have to limp to a old BMW friendley garage 13miles away. Glad I tried though

Bit late now, but this would have saved a lot of time and trouble!Brianmoooore wrote:Cut the new plates across the narrowest place, where the calipers go, twist the cut open a little, slide it into place, refit the four bolts, and weld up the cut, being careful not to lay weld where the handbrake shoes lie.

I used a 30mm socket I checked to make sure it wasn't on the bearing , and got a 4lb lump hammer!!! I didn't give up after 5mins. If I managed to get the the hub off and not the outer bearing the car would have been stuck on the drive! As I don't have a permit for my van the e30 has to live on the street during the week!!

I would have had to get a welder, and I thought changing to bearings wouldn't be a bad idea! But yes I think that might have been a better option in this caseBrianmoooore wrote:Bit late now, but this would have saved a lot of time and trouble!Brianmoooore wrote:Cut the new plates across the narrowest place, where the calipers go, twist the cut open a little, slide it into place, refit the four bolts, and weld up the cut, being careful not to lay weld where the handbrake shoes lie.

TBH, they'd probably be fine without being welded back together. The four bolts hold them in place, and the cut lies part way along the side of a shoe, where there isn't really any load on it. I only really weld up the cut for 'completeness'.
I find rear wheel bearing failure on an E30 to be fairly rare (unlike the fronts)and if you're, going to refit the bearings in the same way as you removed them, you'd definitely have been better off with the originals.

Ok Iv finally fitted the new bearing! Followed the video went on really easy. But I seem to have a lot of play in the hub doesn't seem right to me. Before I fitted the bearing I noticed the inner bearing was in two parts is this normal??

Sounds like you may have split the bearing putting it in, there shouldn't be any play in it.
