Bmw 1987 325is keeps cutting

I have been having this issue lately where I'm driving along and the car just cuts out. I try starting it cranks but doesn't turn on
I have changed the ecu with a second hand ecu from a breaker which didn't fix the problem

Any advise ?

Sounds like a faulty crank shaft sensor.

It seems to turn on of you tap the ecu while trying to turn the ignition
