noticed yesterday mine was not fitted to the lock, would this be the reason why my central locking isn't working or is it just for the dead locks?

you are right the switch on the lock activates the deadlocks the lock/unlock switches are in the door soleniod
the switch on the lock should be held in place by a u shaped clip
