I have a 1990 H reg E30 318i touring... Been my workhorse for 2 years and has been good to me.
Clonked the sump this morning down an unmade road... Only a small clonk.... Had worse in my time !
Oil light came on several miles down the road & I realised what had happened.... No oil on the dipstick and oil oozing out the bottom of the engine !... Haven't had a chance yet to have a good look underneath to see what I exactly did.
My question is... if I've cracked the sump, can it be replaced without taking the engine out ???
It's only done 80,000 and I don't want to lose the car, but if it's an engine out job it may have to go.
Thanks in advance for any replies.... Steve.

there are two parts to the sump ,if it only cracked you can get it alloy welded for about £50 ,when you take the lower bowl off you need to check the upper part isn't fractured .
worst case scenario i have this for sale...

Chances are you've only cracked the lower sump, and this can be replaced easily without moving anything other than the engine under shield.
Plenty of M40 engined scrappers around. A complete engine can be bought for scrap value, so the sumps aren't particularly valuable. When the sump is off, check that three (?) bolts inside the sump that hold the upper sump to the engine block are tight. It's quite common for these bolts to fall out and lie in the bottom of the sump.
