looking maybe to retrofit abs to my car, what would i be looking at? struts, rear arms obviously?
new brake lines, abs pump, and module, harness wiring, anything else i need to look out for?
would i need the instrument cluster also...

Three mounts for the ABS pump, that are welded to the body. Existing instrument cluster is fine.
Did this to a cab. last year, but I had a scrapper donor parked alongside, which helps with all the brackets, fixings, etc.

Pump unit, wiring loom and ECU, wheel speed sensors, brake lines are easy to make up and only needed for the front, the line to the rear is simply extended from the master cylinder to the pump unit.
Clocks stay the same, the ABS loom has a length of wire/bulb that fits into the existing clocks
If you have discs front and rear you will probably already have the abs sensor rings and holes for the sensors
Thats about it, apart from welding the brackets in, really simple TBH

In my experience, there is no provision for the ABS sensors and no trigger rings on the front hubs on cars supplied without ABS . Rear driveshafts are also ABS specific. You would need to be REALLY bored to consider such epic paedo activity

I have driven non abs e30's and properly set up they stop very well and have better brake feel than the abs fitted cars. I really wouldn't bother if your cars brakes are carp it's not the lack of abs that's the likely problem.

Don't quite know what brakes have in common with certain fish, but the point of ABS is not to 'improve' brakes. It's to allow adequate braking in certain situations that can occur in road driving, by apportioning braking forces in a way that is impossible to do manually. These situations don't occur often, but when they do, ABS is the difference between a serious insurance claim and merely a change of underwear. If you require ABS to avoid wheel locking under straight line braking, it's driving lessons that are needed, rather than modifications to the brakes.
