So it's better suited to a 2.7/2,8?Simon13 wrote:catcams make a 283 cam and its a right old peaky thing, you lose all the low down shove in a major way. Not that the 2.5 has much to start with

piper dont have a 285 listed
http://www.pipercams.co.uk/pipercams/ww ... engine=129
not much lift from their cams though
personally id be looking at either schrick or dbilas for the street and catcams for the track.
every catcams ive seen been a bit of a dog on the bottom end

BP285 ultimate road / track day profile - stage 3
The BP285 cam is by nature designed for modified road / track day cars and as such may require additional parts and or light machining of the cylinder head and piston crowns. Generally referred to as the stage 3 of cam tuning this profile retains the tractability required for road use whilst giving good mid range torque and top end power, this profile works extremely well with ported and polished cylinder heads and throttle bodies / carburettors . (Approx 285 ° duration).

They do indeed do the 285* as mentioned above.
I have driven a car with one in, the engine was a 2.7 of unknown build spec it had an 885 head though, but that tells us little.
The engine had a very lumpy idle, and was quite flat low down in the rev range, it properly came on song around 4500 and then went reasonably well.
Like i said I don't know the spec of the bottom end (neither did the owner), other than it was 2.7 which I believe it was. It may have gone better if the engine was built around it (maybe it was). But I would say that it would need a much higher static compression to work correctly, higher even than the highest 9.7:1 early m20. Personally it would not be my choice of cam for a road car, especially standard capacity and compression.
The thing with uprated cams is that if you have more power higher up the rev range, then you will invariably have less lower down, you can't have your cake........ for that you need vanos.
And when people think they want a high powered engine, they want a torquey one. If on the other hand you are just shooting for numbers for down the pub then a lairy cam is a goer.
I think you have a cam in it now dont you, HKF?
As Barry said Schrick 272 is a nice road cam.
*I have been trying to get the go ahead on a schrick group buy, but the mods dont seen interested. But if any one wants one competitively priced, I shall be buying in the next few weeks.*

Well schrick do a 272/272 or they do a 284/272 - i've used this on my old C2 2.7 touring and its a great cam. What it did roughly from dynoing before and after was give me 10bhp on the top end but i lost 10lbs of torque. It gave me 210bhp and 210lbs. Where as in standard form it did 200bhp and 220lbs iirc. In terms of feel from the engine the lighter flywheel fitted made the slight low down loss less. Its a good road cam for 2.7's They idle a bit lumpy but not mega bad.
I've never tried an M20 with a 272/272 schrick i expect its a good choice with a better idle and a touch less top end
