Head directly into steering wheel at 35mph... bosh.

See the steering column driving into his head. Ouch

For a 1985 car, that's pretty good. Check out a 1990 Rover Metro for comparison 8O

..you could get an airbag and a retractable steering column on a W123 Merc from '82, maybe time to change sides 8O

Wow this seems scary at only 35mph I don't know why but i had it in mind that these old girls were built like tanks I guess not.

Shocked really.

Pah! :pff: I stacked a Tech 2 325i Sport head-on into a central reservation crash barrier at 70 mph after aquaplaning on a standing lake of ice and water draining off a field onto a dual carriageway and walked away without a scratch, though my neck hurt a bit the next day. They are indeed built pretty well.

Depends what you hit, what are the chance of hitting a 20 tonne solid block of concrete?

Looks similar to my old pre facelift that I hit a wall with, but I was doing 60+ and the wall broke up on impact

They aren't that bad and very good for the era i think. I clipped a tree and hit a tree stump at 60 odd in my old 318i

Do remember a few years ago 5th gear had one up in the air hanging from a crane to and dropped it on the nose. They said it was a 30mph crash and it stood up well. Far better than that clip

Trying to find that clip from 5th gear

I crashed my first E30 into an armco barrier at 60 Mph, span 180 degrees and came to rest with a lamp post growing from the center of the bonnet.

Walked away unhurt :D

The 'vertical' equivalent of this test is to hang the tail of the car twenty metres up in the air, then drop it nose first onto concrete. The impact speed will be close to 35 MPH.

I bounced a 325i cabrio off a lamp post, through a fence and into a tree at about 50 odd and walked away.

Too many variables in impacts.

bilgatese30 stacked my old S50'd 318i quite bad and walked away.

I enjoyed your write up! The broken nose topped things off a treat - looked like Gonzo! :D

what that dont show in the video is the bonnet cutting though the windscreen and taking off the peoples headsoff. They changed the bonnet opening up at the rear to front for a reason

Rish318 - I don't think that is true chap, as we all know the bonnet has 2 rollers that lock into slots on the body work, the bonnet folds up from the front on impact like a modern car. See...

Image

I think BMW changed the bonnet opening style as its not easy working on the front of the engine without taking the bloody bonnet off every time.
