I am currently changing the timing chain case and I have got the crank pulley at TDC. I just want to see where the timing sprockets should be when the crank is at TDC. I don't have the chain attached so I could move them all in time.

Are there any diagrams or any pictures that will show where the timing marks will be ?

Thanks

Lee

Timing pin in flywheel, arrows on camshaft sprockets facing up, front cam lobes mirroring each other. There's also a locking tool that goes along the back of the camshafts, probably uses a flat edge.

If the camshaft sprocket arrows are facing down then you're 360 degrees out on your crankshaft.

I'm only going from AD here.

ok. I can get crank to TDC using a screwdriver in the first pot. And then I can just move the sprockets to make arrows point upwards ?

Are you trying to time it up to do work, or is it all already apart?

No its apart. I need to take the sprockets off the Camshaft and take the whole timing case off (ally part that bolts onto the block), the bottom cog for timing chain had snapped clean off. Once we've fit the new case and stuff we then need to put the whole lot back together. We couldn't move it to TDC when it was all how it was, so we've had to remove bits separately and im going to make the crank get TDC then when back together put the cam sprockets back on and line up . Just wanting to know where the arrow marker needs to be when the crank is TDC.

Sorry if that doesn't make the best sense my head is feeling fried today.

Well, when the crank is locked on the flywheel, those arrows should be pointing up. I don't know if that is TDC on 1, or whether it's with the pistons all half up their bores as a safety position.

It should be fairly obvious tbh

Flywheel locked is TDC 1 and 4.

so if I put a screwdriver in 1 and 4 I can find TDC with them. Once there both at TDC I know the fly wheel is correct. Then can I simply move the cams so the arrows are both pointing up ? I'm just wanting to make sure I cover it correctly.

Yeah you've got it. Some people may disagree but you don't have to be super accurate. You can only be 1 tooth out if everything is on keyways or woodruff keys, and it's fairly obvious when that's the case. I would say however, try and time the engine with the flywheel rather than sticking a screwdriver in the bores. It's just better practice.

You may struggle to move the cams and pistons seperately in big moves, so you'll have to do each a bit at a time otherwise they will foul on each other.

And remember to turn the engine over 720 degrees by hand when you've put it all together to make sure it lines up again.

Turn the crank 90 degrees before TDC before you start rotating cams. Once these are correct for TDC, you can safely turn the crank and bring pistons 1 and 4 up to TDC as well.

we are the stage of removing the case but are difficulty getting it off. Are there any ways we can take it off without removing the head ? We have taken off all the bolts, including the 4 underneath in the sump.
