Guys
I'm in the process of acquiring the original cassette player for my dash, but heard somewhere that you can buy separate bluetooth audio units that go behind the dash, that have preouts etc.
Thus keeping the original look to your dashboard, but still having the opportunity to stream music from your iphone and run off amps, subs, etc.
Anyone tried these, or even heard of them for that matter?

ive not seen anything that can do that with old stereos, but would be awsome although i should imagine tricky to do and the stereo would also need the function to be able to play it, only thing ive seen is a bluetooth cassete adapter (google it)
or these, but the stereo needs to have aux in ,looks quite handy and no messy cables and can just unplug it from the stereo face and kept in the ash tray

what your saying would be the same sort of thing- but stereo opened up and a wire connected in to the back of the aux imput or whatever, rather than in the front, and wired with power

If you plug anything into the actual old head unit, the sound is going be very poor at best, with the lack of power in those old units.
What I was looking at, was a completely separate unit, that is fitted behind the dash entirely, and it has it's own pre-outs etc. but only has bluetooth capabilities, meaning it's only used for iphone/android music streaming. Therefore although the old stereo is in the dash, I would probably not have any connection/power running to it. It would only be there for aesthetic reasons.

BUT- the stereo still needs some sort of capibility/function for it to play
ie - you need to be able to tell the actual stereo/press a button, for it to know the source you want to play, like the way you press the button to select tape or radio - ie an "aux" input, and the bluetooth unit will still need to be wired in to the stereo via a socket or circuit board or whatever

Not necessarily I've been using a sony bluetooth head unit, and all controls are done on my iphone. Soon as I get in the car, it pairs with my phone, and then from me pressing play on my phone, sound appears.polsta wrote:BUT- the stereo still needs some sort of capibility/function for it to play
So imagine that head unit, but with no other functionality other than what I just described.. bingo.
i also have a bluetooth head unit in my car that does the same, but remember that unit is made for it, but when you press cd, or radio..it changes over and you can re select - so surely you need a ay to "select" the bluetooth , so if you play a cassette or listen to the radio, you can re select it , or switch between

Yeah they look pretty damn good! I think it will add up in the end, restoration, blue tooth etc. plus I'd still be skeptical about the quality of the sound coming out of those old units, unless he's completely rebuilding what's underneath the casing!

Case top and bottom panels removed, cleaned, rust removal and re-painted or polished as required
All front panel parts including dial housing and fascia, removed, cleaned and polished
All control knobs and push buttons cleaned, polished and re-lettered if required
Valves removed, cleaned and tested
Chassis or pcb top and underside thoroughly cleaned and checked for physical damage
Volume/Tone controls cleaned internally with switch cleaner (or stripped and cleaned as required) and lightly lubricated
Tuning mechanism and push button assembly cleaned, adjusted and lightly lubricated
Wavechange and all other switches are cleaned with switch cleaner and lubricated
All paper capacitors replaced (originals returned)
All electrolytic capacitors replaced (originals may remain in place if required for aesthetic considerations)
All other components checked and replaced if faulty or out of tolerance (resistors, diodes, coils and transformers)
On/Off switch checked, cleaned and repaired if required
Replacement of ALL AF11X transistors (we ALWAYS replace this type of transistor as it is notoriously unreliable)
Replacement Solid-State Vibrator fitted on valve radios (we ALWAYS fit a replacement Solid State vibrator)
Step-Up transformer checked and tested on valve radios, this is rewound if necessary
All power, speaker and other cables checked and replaced if necessary
Initial power-on tests and checks to establish a working unit
Fault find and rectify any problems until radio is working as it should
IF alignment checked with wobbulator and oscilloscope and adjusted as required
RF alignment checked with signal generator and adjusted as required
Replacement Dial Bulbs fitted
FMC-1 FM upgrade module or iPOD/AUX modification installed and checked at this point in the process
The radio is fully tested to ensure correct operation on all bands and across all functions
Case re-assembled and final polish
Wires/cables labelled as required
Soak tested with radio and MP3 unit playing for 4 hours
Wrap, box and label ready for return to owner

I've just gone and brought a pretty good looking Alpine CM5908. Should of got a rubbish one for £20 and sent it on to these guys to restore!
One thing I would say, is the originals dont have phono outputs so wouldnt be able to get any amps or anything like that going, which means the quality of sound issue is still present. Alot of money to put into something thats not gonna sound too good.

some do, like some of the blaupunkts for instance, aswell as aux in
there isnt really an e30 original, there are many as it was all optional extras and with e30 production spanning such a long time stereos moved on a lot, so you really need one from the right year to match your car , what was orignal/period dealer fit for a very early 80s chromie, would be very different to a 1991 facelift car for example,and many in betweens , your talking a decade of car stereos

That's a bugger. Seem to be cutting themselves short with that.
situation rescued , he said had problems with people sending them without codes, and some parts hasstle, so it wasnt worth doing
BUT
, after me assuring him mine had code and was actually working ok. hes came around to doing it
he said- unit fully serviced and cleaned,new stem bulbs, tape deck serviced, new aux imput comming out the back , £50 plus return post cost 
cant argue with that , he also said he can change the bulbs (screen color) of units to match the car , i dont need that doing as mine is amber already but thought id mention it
so im going to get mine off to him

I think I'm going down the route of installing the old BMW stereo in the dash, but no connections to it, other than perhaps a power lead, so the time is displayed.
Then put a modern unit in the glovebox, with preouts to a sub etc in the boot. Might hide or cover the unit, so it's not obvious. Only need the bluetooth function tbh, so no need to toggle buttons etc, once it's set up.
Just to clarify, I'm not an 18 yr old who wants ridiculous bass and awful music, just want a good car filling deep sound, whilst not compromising the look of the interior. From looking at everything I think this is the best option.
