Si you need a sensible turd you don't need to fix every other day, something modern that's quirky and hasn't been driven to an inch of it's life on every journey.
An inspection 2 service on an E46 M3 is more expensive than on an E39 M5 because on the M3 you have to check and adjust the valve clearances which means more labour time where on the M5 you dont.h7fal wrote:Now owned an E39 M5 for 3 years and not found it to be a money pit. Seem to remember the E46 M3 is actually more expensive to service.
The M5 has bigger potential for financial ruin, clutches don't last as long, vanos's are less reliable and there are two! MAF's and cam sensors play up regularly and they like an oil leak.
Timing chains have also been known to stretch in old age and they are hard on their suspension so things like bushes and ball joints wear out quicker than on an M3.
The two expensive sticking points on the M3 are the RACP cracking and head gasket going both of which Simon is more than capable of tackling. Vanos's are not totally immune from problems but they are vastly more reliable than the S50 ones in the E36 and the S62 ones in the E39 M5.
I definitely agree with Andrew on not needing a car you have to fix all the time. You were only saying the other day that you struggle for spare time.

I test drove a e39 m5 while I was looking for a new car, it really didn't feel that fast until it got above 100 mph and it felt to controlled if that makes sense
I now own a knuckle dragger e46 m3. It's no rocket ship but I think it feels like a modern e30. And doing my own spanner work it costs no more (bar engine oil) to run than my e30.

This is true about time, how about we get the wife in another car and i can tickle our B3s with a 6 speed gearbox, LSD and some big front 6 pot brakes
Then i can sell the e36, that all involves time to complete. I'll have alot more in the summer/autumn when i'm not at hockey and i've been working weekends since last autumn working a large project at my parents place and jobs at the in laws that i can't say no to. Then my own place needs some work in the gardens and drive. Then i can have some car time
The missus says auto only now. My problem is my toy doesn't work so you need another toy to play with until the other one is ready! Talking of toys RE my e30......................
I need to know of a man who does headwork. I rang my old contact Ike Flack whos done the e30 head originally and the e36 and hes not taking on any one off engine work for the next 3-4 months as hes too busy. Which kind of fluffs the e30 engine build somewhat

Hark at the i c0ck beating himself silly over the i3 whilst his 8ollox are connected to a booster pack !
The Z3M coupe ( NOT the roadster) is an epic hero chariot and the values are only going one way !
Out of Simons list, it would be my only choice . OK , so it has not got a back seat but as he has other 'sensible' turdz and it would be mostly broken, that is not a major issue

While you can buy a Z3M coupe for HALF of the price of a decent E30 M3, I cannot see how they are overpriced and as for being a w4nker chariot, the E30 M3 has that title well and truly sewn up
Stiff competition from E46 CSL owners may change this but the sheer volume of scrap and molested E30 M3s owned by Sparco clad tw4ts means that their title is probably safe

They are overpriced because they don't offer any form of driving pleasure, its an in between car at best, manly suited for a mid life crisis or a couple who think they can drive because they own a mid engined 2 seater.
At least the Sparco cocks get a look, where as the Z owners fade seamlessly in to the background.....live and let die to the poor owners/tuds

E46 M3 if you've got any sense. The Z3 tin top just looks like an upside down c0ck and balls on wheels..

This is exactly the problem I have at the mo - 2 E30s, the wife's Z3 and an E3 is not the most practical of fleets! I hate to admit that all bar the E3 must go to make way for something newer, more economical and more practical. I just don't have the tinkering time I used to. An E9x Touring is calling, but it won't be a lumpy one sadly....bss325i wrote:I definitely agree with Andrew on not needing a car you have to fix all the time. Id say its a toss up between the E39 and the E46, E46 M3s feel ballistic to drive especially with the SMG, very raw
Im going purely on what I think having had a go of a couple. He asked opinion, I gave it so **** off
This is why I dont bother with this site anymore.

Not about saving the planet, im more interested in its the 2p per mile.
Its surprisingly quick, and an exceptional drive due to its full carbon fibre chassis. In fact almost all the panels on the car are made from cf and fully exposed around the openings.

It really is an exceptional car, beats almost all turds I've driven. The tech and the insane CF chassis make this car exceptional value for money.

That and an up yours to HRM as theres zero duty with these!!!! Seriously fun to drive, I would go for the 'motorsport' white and slam it.
I'll reserve judgement until our demo arrives next week, but it'll need to be epic to win me over! Now a Panamera Hybrid ..Demlotcrew wrote:Not about saving the planet, im more interested in its the 2p per mile.![]()

You will be impressed, feels refined like a large car, the cf chassis absorbs the energy from the road very well and with little noise it's effortless.
+1 for the i3.
I'm not remotely convinced that electric cars are the way forward, but this thing is an incredible bit of technology with some astonishing design and superb detailing. The fact that you can outdrag just about anything away from the lights is a small bonus.
Until you've had a go in one and experienced the elastic feel of the way it goes, you won't get it.
If I had the $$, I'd have one for buzzing around town - about the best fun you can have for 30 pence.

I voted Z3m only because finding a decent e34 m5 will be difficult
Simon is a petrol head.... I'm sure he's not looking at that expensive spastic Duracell turd as a replacement for the B10 !!

After an evening of mincing around the west London massive I have to agree the i3 is an impressive tram, for 30 bags it should be. For the same 30k you could have a spanking M135 and lots of petrol AND no range anxiety !
For some people, the i3 is the ideal car. For most, including pikeys like Demlot ,Everett and myself
it is nothing more than an interesting curiousity.
IMO the car is not nearly as 'game changing' as BMW make out, for all its freaky look at me appearance and exposed carbon fibre, it still doesn't really do anything that a 15k nissan leaf cannot. What it DOES do is make the electric car cool and aspirational in a way that no Leaf /Prius / Volt ever could.

Pete none of the other electric cars come close, the cheapest Leaf is 15K + Batteries Lease (£93pm for my mileage and you never own them)!!!!! and with a range of only 75miles at 55mph it makes the i3 look like a regular car.
I wouldn't be caught dead driving at 55 on the motorway, no chance! I did some serious mileage in the i3 that day, 80+ on the way to yours, never did I have any anxiety of running out of range.
The i3 is more of a game changer than most would like to admit, its the iPhone of the car world (changed everything). If I can get a loan through the business from the Carbon Trust Fund then I will be buying one for sure!!!

There is an option to own the car and batteries out right, the cheapest one starts at £21k to £26k and thats including the Government £5k grant!!!!! So the battery only Leaf is actually £31k and the Range extender i3 is £33k, hmmmmm.
Also looking at the specs the Leaf is almost two tones 1945kg, the battery only i3 is £ 1270kg thats 675kg lighter!!!!
