After replacing my tank from a 63L to a smaller 55L my fuel light worked for the first time, ever - but this was with the 63L fuel gauge fitted.

I bought a set of clocks from a 318is (55L tank) so it should show the correct reading. After switching the gauges between the clocks it's now showing as if the fuel gauge isn't registering anything by the looks of it. I can't tell if the fuel light is still working though as I filled the tank up with about 30ltrs of fuel.

Is there anyway I can test each component to find the fault? It's going to be in either the sender or gauge I'd guess but I'm not sure how to go about doing this.

Short the two wires with coloured stripes to the brown wire in the three pin plug to the level sender in turn. One should make the fuel light come on, and the other should send the gauge to full.
I take it you shorted out the second level sender (on the old tank) wiring?

Hadn't given that a thought shorting the wires, if it's that simple that would be lovely. I'll test that tomorrow first then see how I get on from there. Cheers Brian.

Unless you've shorted together the wires from the redundant sender, then the gauge definitely isn't going to work!

I shorted it together last night to take to work today and have seems to now possibly give an accurate reading of the fuel left in my tank, absolute diamond Brian thanks!
