Just abandoned my e46 320d on the layby, it out of nowhere started accelerating and then hit the redline. I turned the car of. Free wheeled for quarter of a mile ( on a steep hill) then started the car again, with the clutch in, no problems and as I engaged the clutch it banged of the redline again.
Car is now abandoned awaiting towing.
What you guys reckon?

I initial through turbo but NO smoke.....
I then thought swirl flap may have been consumed but all the reports on the net say the car looses power rather than revving itself.
Scared to start it again.

Sounds likes it is running away, although normally they don't stop when you turn the ignition off.

It might be needing a new throttle cable. I had that happen with an E30 many years ago with that exact symptom, and it was a neigh broken cable.

Ach of course sorry ... ! Did it get resolved. I wonder if the throttle control might be the issue then?
