Hi Guys,

I am changing the timing chain and tensioner on my BMW this weekend. Does it require me to use that timing chain tool kit that you can purchase. Or would I get away with doing it without ?

Are there other ways to lock it so cams don't move ?

Also how hard of a job it is ?

Cheers

Lee

Cams don't normally move on their own, and have flats on them that you can lay a straight edge across to check, so no, the tool isn't necessary. Just intended to make the job foolproof for the average garage monkey.
A drill bit will serve as a flywheel locking tool. (Just don't forget to remove it when you've finished.

Trying to locate timing chain guides. Any good places to get them one ? only could find one at a BMW dealership and that £150 which sounds extortionate.

See if you can find one in the ZF or Febi parts catalogues. If you do then you can simply ask your motorfactors to order it in.

I have being looking everywhere. I cannot seem to find ones for a decent price. Only ones Ive found are from America and they expect me to pay $48 postage and wait 20 days.

Wow, it would appear that no one is really make M42 parts anymore. BMW or the USA are gonna be your only options from the looks of it if you want new.
