Sticky Windows.....

Whats the best solution for sticky electric windows? The passenger window is very asthmatic, and actually needs a helping hand to close! The car has been in storage for some years, so I think it might just be lack of use, rather than the motor itself.

Any suggestions people? Should I oil/grease/lubricate( ) the runners? If so, with what?

i use spray silicon or liquid silicon for the runners and rubbers round the glass plus it takes grime off any rubber and makes it like new (soft again) not sure where u could get it cz i stole my stuff of bro!

A new whole inner seal is about Ԛ£24 new from the dealer, and if you have a M3 then i would take that route.

spray grease the rubbers, then to get a bit more ooomph in the motors, take them apart and use a razor blade to clean between the gaps and fine emery paper the brushes. i did this on my old 320i as the windows didn't work at all. worked near perfect after this.

spray silicon on window runners and use the straw on tin too do the out of view pieces(unless you remove door cards)can be bought at your local autoparts type place.

its that good it even does the e36 regs a bit of good and they are utter shitters for dropping glass in door due too plastic runner wheels breaking due too increased effort required......not a lot of people know that .....michael kane

i wouldnt use grease based lubricants.....not good on rubber!!!!and will eventually cause further friction

you're right. was meant to type runners. i find vaseline good on rubber. it seems to renew it.

You may find the spray at halfords but it might be better to go to a good quality motor factors. Do not, whatever you do, use wd40 to spray on the rubber as it will, as sort of mentioned above, rot the rubber. I have used specialised spray for the rubber and it should do the trick.

Tell your missus that it is a matter of urgency and saftey to get the windows working properly. Urgency = security/cost of new electric motor mechanisms.
Saftey = getting out of the car in the unlikely event of an accident and the option to get fresh air after a particularly rich and steamy botty cough polutes the atmosphere of the cabin.

Spray on silicon grease!
There is a dealer retrofit type of electric window which is useless. Usually identifyable by blank plugs where the manual winders were.
Only cure for these is to replace them with OE mechanisms.

never had a problem with vaseline on rubber. we were told by the autoglass trainer to use it. stops leaky opening rear quarters a treat. i used vaseline on my pals 205 gti rear quarters about 5 years ago. car still on the road and still not leaking! rubbers still look like new!

A cynic might say that Autoglass might have a vested interest in rotting out window rubbers in a few years!
Not that I would suggest such a thing, of course.
