Slowly gathering the parts for the steering rack change and my power steering pipes clearly need replacing as they are leaking fluid everywhere...

Looking at the diagram below, I'm assuming I'll need the two hoses (no 6 and 7) and the jubilee clips for both ends (no 12 and 13)?

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do ... g=32&fg=20

Also it's hard to tell due to the amount of leakage, but the fluid could be leaking from the mounting points to the pump?

So would it be worth replacing the washers for the bolts? Are the no 9 on the diagram?

If so, they are not listed, so how do I know the part number?

Anything I'm missing?

Any help appreciated :)

Are you replacing a leaking standard rack with an identical standard rack, or upgrading to an E36/46 rack? If the latter, DanThe is the man you want. He supplies two of the three pipes made to fit the later rack.
It's unlikely all your hoses are shot. Two of them operate at almost zero pressure, and only one at high pressure. I've never had to replace one, other than one on the red car in my sig., which was cut in a crash.
The most common leak of steering fluid on an E30 is from the two pipes where they connect to the reservoir bottle, and this is easily cured by removing the two crimped clamps and replacing with heavy duty jubilee clips.
Sealing washers on the pump and rack joints are (theoretically) single use only. If you've entered your VIN correctly on one of the online ETK sites, then all the part numbers you require should be in the list. Any parts in the illustration that don't appear in the list below aren't fitted to your car.

Hey Brian, thanks for your reply.

I will be replacing the rack with an OEM unit, so no need to upgrade anything.

With regards to the pipes, they are covered in fluid from top to bottom, so I assumed the leaks would be on both ends, but yeah as you said, the clamps underneath the reservoir are a common problem.

Saying that, probably the fluid kept leaking for a long time and reached the bottom, so it looks like it's leaking from there as well.

Well, I just thought replacing them all together would be the right thing to do due to their age/condition, etc.

Anyway, will have a look again and see how bad it is, new clips might be good enough :)
