6.5 inch speakers

Am i right in remembering these fit on the rear shelfs of saloons with no butchery?! Or 17cm ones

The standard size for rear speakers in a saloon is 13cm or 5.5".

Any bigger and the shelf needs cutting.

it doesn't i have a memory that my C2 came with 6 inch rear speakers and the shelf was fine i'm sure

i don't really want to fit standard size speakers, i've got two rear shelfs both standard to play with, in fact ive got 3!

6x9's require serious butchering of the shelf

6" should be ok. Personally I'd only put OEM sizes in but good quality speakers and a small sub in the boot for a bit of bass

I'm not planning on selling and i don't mind deviating a little from OEM here, aslong as its not cutting and moulding etc

I don't want to run a sub at this moment, but my amp will allow it so its an option.

You could always mount them on some mdf rings???
They would sit slightly higher but obviously trim the rings and it would look fine and avoid any cutting!!!

what holes do you already have in the shell simon? it's true that 6.5s will give more mid-bass kick (than 5 1/4s) but if you have that kick (and sound stage / imaging etc.) from a good front installation then the back is mainly for rear fill.

6.5s can be mounted underneath a 5 1/4 cut out to save cutting metal or have them sticking too far out of the top.... the secrets to good component installation results are:

- give them air to breathe / work with at the back
- sealing them from front to back i.e. no gaps to allow return waves to muddy the sound
- sitting the drivers on a good baffle. an MDF board or ring is usually utilised to achieve this

well now, i've just completed 2 years 3 months of debt payment - so am now debt free. (aside from mortgages) this means that i have finally left my southsea life in the past and can look forward from here on in. i did manage to restore an escort van along the way last summer and so at least have a 'paul standard' work van at last. (with a very decent install of course.) and i never lost the bike bug, there's a very rapid litre bike lurking in the garage as always.....

i have had to build up my business and customer base in order to clear this debt - and the upside is that i am now earning decent wedge every week. (if you remember before i didn't have to make much to cover my monthlies, so didn't!) savings are now growing surprisingly rapidly. due to some years of under investment in the houses some funds will have to be pointed towards less fun things like patio doors and carpets etc. but thoughts have also turned towards a motor. (as you can imagine i'm sure!) the short list is something like: tech-1 sport, e36 318is or m3, e39 sport or e34 m5, primera p10 gt (saloon), 240z (expensive and rare now), p1800 or mk5b rs2000 or 2 door mk1 scrote. whatever comes up that i can see being moulded into my standards really.

to be honest it's been that long i can't remember what a standard uncut e30 shelf looks like. i seem to recall a desert bowl punched behind the 5 1/4 mounting points that's not really too much help to anyone...?
