ive got a feeling my gearbox is on its way out,, 1st gear crunch, sometimes 2nd too, when cold. gernally getting harder to change gear especially when going fast/higher revs .. (4k+)

what other gear boxes will fit? are there any better? eg ratios etc..

for an 318is !

I think mate that the std 318iS box is all you can use from other BMWs, if you want to invest I'm quaife or something.

I think all the 4-cylinder cars use the Getrag 240 'box, so there will be many of about. Think the ratios are the same too, but not 100% sure.

ratios aren't the same. I asked about fitting an iS box to my 318i and got told the bell housing was different.

Would love to be proved wrong!!!!!!!

getrag 240,., so from any car? doesnt have to be bmw? could be merc as long as its a getrag 240??

Well the owners manual says the ratios are the same, and that even includes the 320i which can be a getrag 240 (or alternatively a ZF). I'd assume the housing is the same but would certainly check before going ahead.

I don't think it's safe to assume that all getrag 240s are alike though. Why not just get one from an E30?
