I'm working on an '89 M3. I need to get at the sunroof motor, because while it runs, it does not move the guides, even with the sunroof removed. (I can move the guides manually with the hex tool.) Can someone help me determine how to get at the motor -- how to remove the headliner that covers it?

While a good service of the sunroof every twenty years or so is a good idea, it sounds like your problem is that the motor drive clutch is disengaged. Tighten the large hex. nut around the shaft where the manual tool fits.
