My heater keeps going from hot to cold

My e30 warms up a quarter of the way on the temp gauge, the heater blows out hot air fine until it is driven at speed where the heater then decides to blow out cold air even tho its on max heat.

Check that the heater hoses haven't been swapped over on the bulkhead. Hose from back of head to bottom stub.

Could it have something to do with the engine being starved of air? as i think my air intake hose isnt in the best location
