Got the weber carb fitted and was hit with a £200 bill when i was expected £50 ... the carb that was sold to me needed parts manufactured and the worst bit is the original filter doesn't fit onto it meaning i need to buy a new one.. sigh

Would imagine the thinner pancake KnN would be worth a look, not sure what Weber you have though as the one I had moons ago on my m10 ran a standard filter. Maybe you have a bigger Weber?, 8)
Can't help on the choke sorry

Hey glad you got the carb.
The choke cable can be fitted near the left side of the steering (as seen in a reference picture I had saved from someone on the forum):

This is the K&N that I bought off Amazon because my 316 didn't come with the Round filter box

If so many have fitted the stock air box on the carb, get the carb fitting checked, might still work out cheaper.

Some ON SALE options on Amazon for your K&N in case you still want to buy it.

316 doesn't have many horses in the first place, and certainly can't afford to lose a few to aftermarket K&N tat. The original filter fits with an adaptor ring.

Brian, I found a guy selling a Carb Cover Box for about Pounds 20 on eBay, but shipping is a killer, as it's heavy + over sized, about 40-50 Pounds more according to the seller so he decided it's not worth sending it.

I have the rubber hose, and a new filter, hope to get the box eventually, till then I will have to make peace with the K&N :)

I have found a thin base gasket which will make around a 5mm different from the current spacer block, do i need an adapter so the original filter can be put onto the carb?

According to Brian, yes. However, you may find it fits OK as is - try it and see!

Been told that the adapter will cost me a whopping £54.33, maybe a k&n would be a better option.

A few rust 'spots' have started to appear on the top of the front chrome bumper, can these be removed with wire wool/chrome polish?

Don't use wire wool - it will scratch the chome. Best to use chrome polish, or if it's bad, try rubbing damp tin foil on it.

Pictures of your attempt please, we can't figure what the problem is.

The plastic cover plate under the console can be drilled to accommodate the cable.

How thick - have you removed the panel?

Check all the fuses first:
http://www.e30zone.net/e30zonewiki/index.php/Fuse_Box

Then take a look at the earths for the lights.

Check all the terminations of the brown leads against the bodywork - any obviously corroded ones should be cleaned with fine sandpaper.

Also check the bulbs, and replace any with broken filaments; they are easily tested by using a length of wire and hooking them across the car battery.

I had a little look and the plastic plate where that choke cable is attached can be removed, i did this and the majority of the plastic is reinforced with that thick foam, the only gap to drill a hole is the already existing one that the plate bolts on? is this the best place to put the cable?

Also - do i have to put the cable through the hole inside out? as the choke cable is already inside the cabin so i may need to remove it and re attach..

What's to stop you driling through the thick foam, or partially removing a small section of it so that you can fit the choke cable in the usual place?

The normal practice is to fit the choke knob first, then feed the cable through the bulkhead and attach it to the carb.

Good point mate, is the cable easy to remove and attach? the mechanic obviously did it when he fitted the carb but ill but the one removing and re-attaching the cable.

Also have a pretty annoying problem, the car is a pain to start one i have stopped it to fill it up for petrol etc. it will keep ticking until i turn the key back towards me.. I also left the car for 3 hours the other night, returned to it at 9 and it was again a pain in the ass to start.. was this just due to the cold?

Yes, the cable should be a simple case of unscrewing the fixing screw/bolt at the carb choke lever and pulling out the inner cable, and releasing any clamp that may be on the outer cable sheath - or you may just need to pull it through from the abutment plate.

It appears to be the uppermost cable, in your photos above.

Take a note of how it is attached BEFORE you go pulling it apart!

Difficult starting may be down to cold weather - perhaps you're not applying enough choke? What is actually making the 'ticking' noise?

The choke is all the way out mate, like its ticking over but won't start and i don't want to keep it ticking as i don't want to damage anything

Perhaps try experimenting with less choke - perhaps you're flooding it...

Thats exactly what i have avoided.. surely after stopped for 5 minutes the engine should start up straight away without any difference in choke etc as the engine temperature wouldn't of changed too much?

Sure, if the engine is warmed up with a few miles of use, then switching off for 5 minutes shouldn't require any use of choke.

Thats what i mean, its a 10-15 minute drive to the petrol station, so the car should start up straight away but it doesn't, maybe the carb needs cleaning?
