Is it east fitting a sump on one of these m40 engines?

Is it just as simple as unbolting it or do things get in the way?

Thanks.

If its just the lower sump section then yes its very easy with nothing in the way.

If its the upper section as well then its a bit more involved as you will need to lower the front cross member to remove it.

I wouldn't attempt to lower the cross member - broken off bolts are very, very boring. Easier to undo the engine mounts, jack the engine up as high as it will go without straining anything (remove the fan shround and the top rad bracket so that it can move about), place some bits of wod between the mounts and the crossmember and lower it down. That gives enough room to wangle the sump out. A bit of a cow but not too bad.

Andy is right much easier to raise engine up than drop the front subframe in terms of potential problems

It's just the lower sump pan that has a crack near the sump plug. So it's not a simple swap? Just remove bolts?

It's a e30 318i touring 1993

Lower sump is easy. Just a ring of bolts. As it is a touring , it is worth fixing :)
If it has stupid lowering springs, now may be the time to fix that issue......

I have a new sump... Just a case of getting a gasket then and unbolting sump, nice to know I don't have to mess around with anything else! :D

While you have the lower sump off, check three(?) bolts which hold the upper sump to the block that are inside the sump. They often work loose, and it's not unusual to find one or more lying in the bottom of the lower sump.
Depending on how much the lower sump is damaged, check the oil pick up pipe and filter.

Don't forget to drain the oil first..............

The loose bolt issue is quite common and is one of the reasons an M40 or M42 can drop oil pressure. M60 V8's used to do something vaguely similar - the oil pump retaining boilts could unwind leaging to the oil pressure warning at idle. BONG! :D
