If it did, there would be a lot of V8 powered E30s popping up around here! I believe its only the V8 manual gearbox that will fit.
Maybe the 328i/M3 box could be used with an adaptor of some kind, but it wouldn't be a straight fit.

There was a place selling a adapter to use a M5* gearbox a while ago, however they never put up infomation on it, no additional photos, no one that could actually show it worked and the starter motor was on the wrong side for RHD cars.
Also there was no infomation on what clutch/flywheel was to be used, i imagine the gearbox with the adapter would bolt together but not work...
In short, no you have to use a M6* box for a direct bolt on with stock parts

Thread dig! The ZF S5D 320Z was used behind the V8s. The E34 3ltrs I believe it was. It uses a different front half case. The part numbers on Realoem.

But a ZF S5D from a E36 328 wont fit as it has the wrong bell housing - if you find a pile of those hanging around......

It doesn't have a separate bell housing, but there are two different front halves available. A V8 pattern and a 6 pattern.

So in theory, you could buy a new 3.0 V8 bellhousing from BMW and swap it on to a 328i rear casing.... certainly a nice idea, but looking at the price of a bellhousing on BMWfans, who is going to chance it??

Yes.
The price is the issue. Might make it impractical for yous fullas, where there are v8 boxs available, but for the likes of Willnz and myself it gives us a chance.

Can you not get a v8 box shipped out?

The cost of a V8 box plus shipping would be stupidly high, the cost of the box is bad enough!
If it works, get on. It would make it cheaper for us over here too
