Does anyone know somebody or a company that is good at repairing faulty ECU's from my other post (see my update at the end).

As I now know that ECU repair is what needs to be done to finally sort this out even though the car still runs.

Have you removed the ECU lid to visually see if anything is obviously blown? Also, check the underside to see if there are any dry solder joints, etc.

Considering the undesirability of a carb-driven auto, I'm sure you'll find a replacement ECU for a very low price.

Sadly have just tried that (carefully unbending all the tabs to open it) but infuriatingly nothing is visible even when scrutinised under a lit workbench magnifying light - but am willing to look at anything specific within the ECU - just point me to it / the right area - the only positive point so far is that the PCB of the ECU does not have any water damage at all (worst case water scenario = delamination of [fiberglass?] PCB) - that would be a seriously terminal ECU event!

Here you are; replacement ECU for ten quid. Shipping might cost a bit though...

Do you have a multimeter? If so, you could use it to verify that the diodes (usually a cylindrical item with a band at one end) work in one direction only.
Some multimeters have a diode test mode, but a low resistance mode will work equally well; it should show low resistance when connected one way round and infinite resistance the other way.

OK Grrrmachine Will contact your link in Poland to check on compatibility
Speedtouch - Yes have multi meter with diode test function (do all multi meters need to have the leads touched to both ends of the diode then manually reversed to check other way?) there must be a nearly a hundred diodes on there! But will start testing. Is there some way diode testing is done faster with specialised equipment i.e. that could automatically reverse the diode connections internally by itself?
Speedtouch the question is also how also do you test a power transistor? Or do you think it is just the diodes?
There are three Power Transistors on one side of the PCB that are riveted to a heatsink which is also riveted to the PCB & screwed down to the base of the steel ECU Box
