So yeah... Snapped the only key that came with the car in the door because the lock forces you to wriggle it locked and unlocked. Its a 325i Sport 1986. First question : whats the deal about getting new keys? do BMW have spares saved for this kind of thing? Can I just get a new one cut? Second question : Once i have a new key, I'm going to convert the locking system into key-less entry. Can someone suggest a good kit for this and a guide that would help me out? Would really appreciate the help, Cheers.

You can get new keys from BMW, you need to provide chassis number, logbook and i.d.
This will only work as long as the locks are original to the car.

A locksmith can come out and make a key to fit your locks.my old boss did it when he lost a key to a sale car
he came out.and opened the car.and made a new one from the ignition barrel then coded it to the ecu.all for about 100quid

go to a bmw dealers with your log book and ID and so on.. and they will cut it to the VIN number to fit the locks, if the key worked on the glove box then 9 times out of ten the locks be the same and have not been changed. But i got a new drivers lock coded to the new key and the old key would not work as due to wear of the pins in the barrel of the driver door all others worked with the new key
So a new cut key may not work and new lock set is needed worse case
Not all dealers do it but they normally have a local dealer in the area that does it

Once you've got your new key, a lock rebuild kit from BMW isn't expensive, just a bit fiddly to do from what I've seen.Stevieabz wrote:So yeah... Snapped the only key that came with the car in the door because the lock forces you to wriggle it locked and unlocked.
Key-less entry is great, but you won't be able to set the deadlocks with it.
