I need to change the rear springs as they're fooked, and going to change the shocks while I'm at it. Any suggestions for what I should get?

Rear springs, I'm assuming original BMW part, but the shocks I want something a bit better then the technology on the original parts.

I'm not into lowering or sporty stuff, want the original look with a soft bump free ride. Been reading a lot about the Blisteins, but I'm seeing prices of over a grand a pair, which is a little outta my league :?

Topmounts for the shocks. Use E46 cab mounts.
Spring rubbers.

Check the hand brake mechanism.

Clean the arches and rust proof them.

Check the exhaust mountings, particularly the one on the back of the box where it attachs to the boot floor.

Antiroll bar bushes.

Once you start it never ends!

It's worth looking through the wiki for all this stuff.

And it makes the fine fellows who look after it happy, too.

Cut and pasted from the wiki pages
...Rear top mounts are interchangeable on all E30 models. However, we have found that E46 Convertible mounts are also compatible, and are a stronger component too. They are considered a useful upgrade when refreshing your rear bushes...

Scroll through the list for part numbers..

http://e30zone.net/e30zonewiki/index.php/Bushes

and order them from Cotswolds BMW in the traders section on here for a bit of a discount.

Sorry, that should have been front of the box.

One last question... are B4 shocks ok for what I'm going for? There's B6's and B'8's?

B4s give the closest to standard ride.
B6 is hard, B8 takes your fillings out.
