Strange one tonight!

Stopped on the way home tonight to buy some beer,got back in the car and tryed to start it,the engine turned over as normal but I had no ignition lights and the rev counter was working but very strangely although the engine wouldn't even fire let alone run.I gave the main relay a tap and it engine burst into life and everything working fine.

Very strange, a faulty relay on an e30.
M30 Tech 1 Touring on gas.
