Hi, am going to look at an A6 Avant 3.0TDI Le Mans S line Quattro (Oil burner Audi estate) tomorrow, anyone any experience of these?

I saw 2 today...went like this

Car 1. Service required thing pined up soon as i started the car, sales man said "don't worry we can just plug the laptop in and clear that", right....oh i said, can i have a look at the service book. The car had done 57k. There was a stamp at 56k which had no address, name or phone number on it, it simply said "AUDI approved service" with a squiggle sinature. Upon asking for the service (which i was told was a MAJOR service) the guy said he had no invoice for it. Right mate, thanks for that, love, get the kids we're off - i said

So went to see another at a posh garage - this one had just come in - it was an auto with flappy paddles which are

The sales man threw me the keys with a smug "another victim" grim. I opened the boot and i think the prevous owner must have had a hungry dog. The top back part of the rear bench was totally missing with chew marks all over the seat. All 4 alloys were (no exaggeration) destroyed by kerb rash with completly slick tyres. Bodywork was covered in scratches. This was a 3 year old 55k mile car !!

Fingers crossed this is in better nick tomorrow

anyone have any tips/feedback on these ?

Nasty VAG scrap. Chocolate gearboxes and injector and inlet manifold flap dramas on the 3.0 TDI . Do not buy without a GOOD warranty , as with most modern scrap :(

Hi Jim. I seem to have missed this thread.

My current car is an A6 Tdi Quattro Sport Avant. I bought it when it was three years old and for the last 2-3 years have been thinking I should replace it with another. The problem is, it's fantastic and other than it getting a
Bit leggy now (170k) there isn't much to complain about. It's never let me down.

I know they are prone to electrical faults, mine has an intermittent locking one which affects the front passenger door when the weather is wet. If regularly serviced - I would insist any car you buy is, it will serve you well. I had a bit of a shock when the temp needle stopped reaching its central position when fully warm. The £35 stat cost me several hundred pounds in labour as this component is buried and the front end
Has to come off to get at it. It was an ideal time to get the timing chain replaced, which added to the cost these need to be done every 80k.

Mine is an auto tiptronic, which can be taught to learn and adapt to your style if driving. It also has Buttons on the wheel for manual gear changes. :D

I haven't seen anything worth buying at less than £10K. What's your budget.

Tyres, discs etc are expensive, but no more than BM I'd say. You're handy so that shouldn't bother you. Oil burners are very robust. :)

Thanks Gert, that's a great review, thanks for that, most appreciated.

My budget is £15k

I'd like an auto ideally but not fussed if it's the right car.

This one looks nice, i'm going to have a look tomorrow:

Doesn't look like it's got sat nag though?

I had an A6 quattro tdi Le mans edition about 18 months ago, it was an 07 car. The build quality was exellent, and it never give me any trouble mechanically, the only down side was the fuel consumption was very poor, it never done much over 30mpg.
Good luck with your search anyway.

Jim. I can't open the link on my phone :( £15k should buy a good one. I read the 2 & 3.0 can be problematic, so check servicing is regularly carried out. Let us know how you get on.

Best colour IMO is the metallic grey (Daytona). Hope it's a nice one tomorrow.

Check all gear changes are smooth and hold it at a constant 35 or 40 mph to see if the traction control lights come on. They should not. The Quattro holds the road like shite or a blanket (apologies for the comparison!).

Will do but the wife won't come with me tomorrow so i'll have to collect it later.

The bad news is the Granite e30 is going to have to be (hang on let me get the lingo right) served on to a victim, so this is soon to be for sale

That the one with the recent spray job? Nice! I wish I had more space in the garage I'd like a tin top to go with the cab and that would do very nicely! :)

Oh, is the A6 a manual? I've only had autos and seem to prefer them. I must be getting old. See if you can find an auto brilliant slush boxes. :)

Have you looked on the Audi Approved used car site? They're a rare thing though and the 2wd 2.7TDi is far more common. From Audi it'll be more $$$ but will be a proper car with a warranty. Quattros avoid the nasty Multitronic but the later gen V6's have the timing chains (all four of them) at the back of the engine - well, the 3.2 petrol does and they have issues.

For £15'000, an E61 530d Touring would be a better bet but appreciate that the Audi has a nicer interior and isn't TFU in snow.

well, i rang the garage and they had someone travelling down from Birmingham to view the car at 2pm. So asked if i could visit after that which is fair as it's a long way for them to travel. They bought it !

Back to searching about

only problem is, the Mrs has been on the tinternet (fatal error i know) and like the Hyundai i40

oh dear

You need to talk some sense to the misses. Your budget is good enough to get a cracking one, but as I mentioned I'd go for the auto over the manual any day :)

Both very nice. Spec on blue one seems a little better. I'd be tempted by the silver one, though. The standard spec on these is pretty high. Have you driven any Jim?

Go to your local audi dealer and see if you can get into one.

A six year old, oil burner, with 50k the engine hasn't even been run in. If it has FSH with a dealer, you're not going to get any big bills, I would have thought.

That's what my mate with the 08 Q7 thought..............

Indeed, it could happen to any complex modern turd. The moral of the story is with these sort of cars you need a warranty and not all warranties are created equal .

He has a pretty comprehensive warranty which will pay up to £150 ph labour BUT it has £500 excess for each claim and as his turd has four big issues , at best he has a 2k hit looming :(

Bloody hell that's a good warranty to pay £150 ph!

ALWAYS check the small print on aftermarket warranties before buying!!!!!!

Those flappy paddles that you allude to most probably denote a DSG gearbox...
