I've decided to bite the bullet and try and do a write up for the passed year almost!
Heres my 1989 Facelift 316i
Image
Image

I bought her 22nd September 2012 as a cheap run around whilst I did a bit of work on my 1.8t Passat.
At the time I was looking for a cheap car after totalling my previous run around (1.3 Suzuki swift LOL), and stumbled across a white 318i touring e30, straight away i fell inlove with it and went to view it a couple of days after. Although, being ebay all was not as it seemed!!!
All four arches suffered major rust along with the tailgate, skuttle pan, rear valance, wheel well! it was a let down! so we left empty handed!

That night I returned back to ebay only to find a closer 4 door saloon! I looked at the price and couldnt believe it! £600 classified ad, Mtech2 skirts and spoiler, colour coded bumpers, Strut Brace, All four electric windows, lowered on springs with 14" bbs rz, Dash conversion to the 6 button computer, Toad alarm with remote centeral locking, rear sports seats upgrade, Brand new jvc stereo, two new tyres, 12 months mot, 11 months tax! (£220 alone) as well as more! quickly going through the list of things it soon added up to way over the asking price?

I got straight on the phone and arranged to view the car the weekend coming and that is exactly what i did!
comparing the two cars i'd looked at, this car was a gem! small ammounts of rust under the boot and rear valance but for 24 years old she was mighty fine! considering price.

The guy was a real genuine bloke who told me he'd been trying to shift it for months with no joy in which time it had developed an irratic idle when cold, something which would later spark the entire build I'm currently doing :)

Small problems aside I couldn't believe it! it came with a box of spare parts! (some I'm still using to this day) 6 e30 hard back books including 2 haynes manuals reciepts adding up to well over £1500 that he had spent alone the list goes on!
Still trying to grasp just how much car I was getting I had no problem handing over the £600 asking price (and still felt asif I had stolen it)
He was happy enough with the price and needed it gone, so I guess we were both winners :)

After what seemed the shortest 20 mile drive i've ever been on I was home and finding myself trying to come up with any excuse to go out and drive this thing!

I kept the car Basically the way I bought her for a good 3 or 4 months using it daily even for work occasionally, until It really started growing on me, I loved the smooth drive and how the dash curled to face the driver! and even though it was only the 100bhp m40 engine I got my first taste of Rwd car in the wet! I was sold! admittedly the poor little m40 was a bit abused in the process.. haha

Once I decided I was keeping her I started to refurbish the 14' rz's as they were a bit corroded in places, and at the time the cars paint wasn't bothering me so I was looking for something to suit the Weinroot red Bimmer! Eventually decided on a subaru wrx type of gold! I did quite like the idea of gold but mainly I could get the paint cheap!

I started hand sanding the lips on them through about 5 layers of paint :/ to then polish the lips , while I rubbed down the spoked centres until smooth ready for paint. (about 9 hours work went into 1 wheel)
Image
/\/\The 14' rz once the lip was sanded, against my 18" passat Lm Reps/\/\
Image
Image
Image
Image
This was the end result of the first wheel offered up to the old :)
Also if you look above the N/S High beam you can see the nasty folded dent in the front of bonnet!

I spent a good 5 or 6 nights after work on the wheels only getting two finished, when i bolted them back on the car i decided I didn't like them.. A lovely way to smooth out your finger prints and give yourself arthritis for nothing ey!
With all this being said In the long winter months I actually slid into a curb at low speed and destroyed all my hard work anyway..

Image
/\/\ February this year /\/\

After all the hassle over the wheels I took them off to rethink my idea's as a friend of mine sold me some cheap as chips alloys with legal tyres to slide about on.. :)
Image

The next thing to strike me was an irritating little exhaust rattle, I decided to go against previous thoughts of standard oem rear section and found a nice rolled tip cherry bomb for cheaper than the oem part, as soon as it arrived I got to work replacing a section of rotted exhaust and welded the back box on with my own custom made mounts...
Image
Image

everything went to plan and i cured the rattle, I think.. You see I couldnt actually hear anything over the exhaust when the car was started, a combination of no cat, one mid box and a straight through resonating back box..
Lets just say a month or so of head aches and a £30 fixed penalty fine and I had ripped the bloody thing off for good! (blame it on my age I'm only 20 remember!)

What followed was a nightmare of trying to remake the old mounts I had cut up and re attach the old back box! A hard lesson i've now learnt is not to be a gary boy!
Also bearing in mind I was making do with parts on the bmw as at this time I was still toying with my passat!

I spent the remainder of this year (2012) working on the passat with just a few alterations to the bmw, I took off the old headlight wipers and washer jets, they had never worked for the previous owner so i saw no point in them being there, also decided to take the number plate off which i did quite like! (had it in the window for a month or two)
Image
One day soon after I detected a leaky drum, which resulted in two new cylinders and shoes + painted drums.
Image
I gave it a days prep for winter checking the antifreeze , and sanding off the surface rust from under the boot, with a quick prime to prevent anything getting any worse! (I knew at this point if I kept the car I was going to sort the body work out)
Image
Image

Image

Then Winter hit, after what seemed a really mild wet autumn we were faced with constant days of temperatures reaching -9 and colder!
Image
Image
Image
In which time nothing really happened except ALOT of sliding about everywhere!
Image

I tried to keep the snow and ice off her but it fell every night and I didn't want to risk damaging the paint just to get some icicles off! :(
This went on for a few months in which the m40 went from bad to worse, the idle was very rough and upon start up with would rev all over the place until warmed up (from 500rpm all the way up to 5000)

Finally the snow cleared but the problems didn't! I replaced numerous vaccum pipes, cleaned the inectors and throttle body, I checked the Throttle position sensor and replaced the Idle control valve but nothing would cure it!
Eventually it developed a misfire and after i purchasing a pressure tester I realised number 4 was down 30 psi, This really was the turning point in the cars life.. It was either sell the car on, scrap it (ford loving dads opinion) or give it a new heart!

Thankfully I chose number 3!

Image
After mix and matching the wheels to stay legal (after the winter destroyed my rear tyres) ;) I still drove the car daily after this, knowing that i was going to replace the engine i saw no harm in doing so! Must have been a rare old site, odd wheels and the idle of a harley! ha ha
Image
Eventually as the weather picked up so did the car! not brilliant, but what i would consider healthy enough to drive daily! and thats exactly what I did! The whole project was put on the back boiler again and simply just enjoyed :)
Image

Then on one random day after talking to a mate about it, I decided to remove the rear spoiler, to see what it'd look like..
Image

After mixed comments off mates I decided it would look alot better in the original look! (as it only had standard bumper/valance. Image
/\/\ A mates MINT! E30 m50'd cabby /\/\

Within a day or two the Four Holes from The cheap reproduction tech2 were welded up and in need of some primer! and with this the project had officially started!
I went round the whole car marking out imperfections, sanding down and filling the big ones and smoothing out the boot/surface rust damaged metal under the boot.
Image
Image
Image

Then after a day of rain i got her in the garage and gave her a quick blast of primer to keep everything safe from the elements.
Image

Whilst I was doing this I was on the e30 parts for sale topic during the evenings and soon found a Non Vanos e36 m50 lump for sale from the helpful chap tomae335
Image

After a bit of saving up and a few pm's we set off to yorkshire (a 300 mile round trip) to pick up the e30's new heart.
And just about managed to get the bloody thing in the back of the van!
Image

..to be continued!

got it back and managed to wrestle it into the shed with my cousin.. about 100 metres away from the van!
after that was all sorted my attention was back on the body work, with alot of the car body being prepared for primer, often in the rain (Sometimes I can squeeze her in the garage but rarely now the cars a rolling shell)
Image
a gap in the weather popped out of nowhere, The PERFECT opportunity to get the engine out and the bay stripped for paint..
Luckily had a friend with a hoist who was generous enough to drop it round
It took me all evening to get the engine ready to pop out! loads of awkward snags and the fact that it actually rained..
Image
but the next day i managed to pop the front of her in the barn and she was up and out.
Image
(was a complete bastard tilting engine down to slide the box out! took me loads of attempts.. and certainly will recruit a helper when the m50 goes in!
Did consider alternative eco solution to the m50...
Image
haha, Next job was to get the remaining wiring out of the way so i could clean the inside of the bay up!
Image
I was aware of a small rust issue on the battery tray/bulkhead which then revealed itself as much bigger than originally seemed...
Image
Originally when i started this project I'd actually only just got my first welder and still to this day am learning to perfect the art!
But when this problem occurred, I made a plate up to weld over the top as most of it isnt even seen anyway!
Image
Sprayed it with a bit of rust repellant the day before i welded it in.. Few flames occurred haha (not shown was a little back plate also welded in)
Image
After some primer on the bare metal.. ALOT of elbow grease and cans of cheap degreaser followed.. then a whole lot of knuckle bashing sanding!! Still to this day cleaning the 24 years of crap from the engine bay and paint prep was the worst job!
Image
But after I felt that smooth primer it was all worth it
Once I got the front primed with the remaining couple of litres I had left, I had to save a bit to order more supplies!! In the mean time my new engine stand had arrived so I tested it out on the e36 box! giving it a good clean.
Image
And with the purchase of a good quality sheet, I removed the sunroof for inspection/prep.
Image
There was a few bubbles that were scaring me previous to removing it..
Image
but after a closer inspection the rust was seriously minor, got away with a light sand and a tiny bit of filler

anyways as I've been slack I thought I'd add a bit more and try and update this thread!

I'd been looking for the right colour for the car and had literally imagined it in every colour! But i've always been a fan of brown.. haha I know it might sound weird but I think it suits the retro cars especially the e30!! originally back then the idea was to spray on a basecoat and smooth down to get a satin finish, as all I wanted to do was dump the engine in and have fun in it! anyways I settled on a colour (a88 Hot Chocolate Metallic) Its a new mini colour so I figured in some sort of way it was still a bmw colour”¦ in a small way!
Image

Once I saw it I was on a mission! One friday night after work I set about dismantling the more door (with help from the girlfriend) Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

We pushed it into the garage and set about getting it down to the bare bones! which took until 2:00 AM
Image
Image
Image
She looks soo happy”¦ HAHA!! Finding a place for all the interior+doors was a nightmare!! 8O 8O

Woke up bright and early the next day to rub down the shell and prep for primer!!
Image
Image
Image
Image

Gave it a few coats of the grey stuff and that was saturday over!!!
Image
Image
Image

I didn't really spray the rear valance because at this point I thought I would replace the lower section with some sheet steel!! which I later opted out of when I realised it would be ridiculously hard, and probably end up looking shit!

Anyway, Got up sunday rubbed down the primer where needed and shot it with some Brown!
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
I loved the colour with the new carbon black badges!!
I fitted the new smoked indicators I ordered from poland into the bumper and tried it on to have a look..
Image
Image
rather than buy new bumper strips I just sprayed mine with satin Hammerite.. did a good job! :)

new hella plate lamps..
Image
Image
I actually started fitting things to the car in the week following the paint, originally it was going to stay like this until a bit of pride took over! I couldn't justify the bodged rust repairs I had planned and I felt a sudden surge of confidence in my spraying

The type of colour I was trying to achieve..
Image
Image
I'd been looking at gloss paint before but never thought I could do it myself!
Anyway I decided against the base coat as it wasn't what I really wanted and basically scrapped all the work/money I had put into the original satin paint.. to pursue my shiny dream.. haha

I was looking around for panels to replace my valance with no luck.. my first thoughts was to find a scrapper and just cut the whole back end off but with only a few local yards and one turd I soon realised that it would be almost impossible to find a scrap e30 with an intact rear valance.. with that all over I moved to the net and found one on europart, It was £99 delivered which seemed reasonable but after reading an unconvincing description stating it might line up exactly with the car.. I soon turned my attention to Cotswold bmw! I placed a small order with them including a genuine facelift rear panel! at £250 alone and flying in from germany!!

yeah man! when the weather picks up its going to be done, this thread is very out of date and I'm trying to update it.. this stage was last year sometime!

This is what I faced..
Image
Image
Image

Then one nice evening I decided to bite the bullet and get it ready (I didn't have any access to the garage at the time)

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

managed to get it to this stage but only really had a 4" grinder which proved difficult when trying to remove the old lap of the original panel! its very fiddly in places

On closer inspection the rot under the towing eye had gone deeper than first thought as it had actually eaten away most of the o/s boot pocket..
Image
Image
So just had to make up a new piece, cut out the crap and replace!!
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

The rear panel was eventually ready to be fitted a few days later!
Test fitted first to make sure it all look on the money (good tip is to use a screwdriver through the towing eye!)
Image

Image
Image
Image

With a few little adjustments it was fitting lovely!! I don't own a spot welder so I just welded the entire join externally and partially on the inside where I could!

Image
Image
Image

I also welded up the aerial hole! radio never really worked properly, and I only really listen to iPod! it could possibly work though as I'm pushing the aerial up the pillar!
Image
Image
Image

With all that I tested the light and they still fit as they should! everything seemed to line up :)

Now.. while all this was going on in my tiny little bike shed I was tinkering away at the m50!! :D I'm not a mechanic by a long shot so a rebuild at this stage was just not an option!
The engine I bought was from a 100k e36 which had been used for drifting at the end of its life but then had the rear end of the car written off in a crash. (I was told)

I've already got future plans for cams and m52 crank and pistons but we'll leave that for another day! :P

Heres what I got up to..

First things first when we got the engine we brought it back on a pallet to tie it down in the van, and this is what I did for storing it in our bike shed. I knew I wanted to work on it so I bought a cheap £40 engine stand off ebay and with a bit of welding it was up to the job of cradling my baby!!! trouble was (with most of the build) I didn't have that spare pair of hands, bar the girlfriend! So we cleared the shed and got the secret weapon!
Image
Image

Which made bolting it up easy as pie! once it was on everything was coming off!!
Image
Image
Image
Image
Generally everything seemed in good condition! luckily the bloke before me had fitted the 5 series pick up, sump and dipstick swell as the m52 tubular manifolds!
I just started unbolting everything at first!
Image
Bought a pack of sponges to plug the ports and I was away!
Labelling every pipe and plug end so I know exactly how it goes back!
Image
That way all I need to do is match plugs from old to new loom when fitting :D
Image
Image
This was a nice sight to see!! It dawned on me at one point that the 2.0 would look aesthetically identical.

Image
Pipes everywhere!!

Got it down to the bare bones and went at it hard with a wire brush and a few wire brush cordless ends (which really work wonders)
Image

Bought some cans of engine enamel previously and here were the initial results!
Image

gave it three coats all in about 36 hours (one every 12) and it turned out good!

Image

Then started on the other side!

Image
Image
Image

I then turned my attention to the rocker cover which I got sandblasted by a mate! :)
Image
Image

and the end result..
Image

Image

Then Gave the sump some tlc!

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Also cleaned up the inlet, individually cleaned and flushed the injectors and had to weld up the nut on the fuel rail sand off the rust and respray it! :)
