The E21 forum sucks and you all know much much more and have been a great help thus far.
I now have the car turning over. The car keeps blowing the electric fuel pump/auto choke fuse which is fine, my car has NO electric fuel pump and NO automatic choke anymore. Its mechanical on both sides
The car is cranking but will not pump fuel ( you can see it in the lines ) Any ideas?

316 carb turds never had a factory electric pump. Always a mechanical one on the side of the head. Often when sat for a while, the fuel in the line will have drained back and the pump will struggle to suck it through. You can pour a bit of petrol into the carb and if it fires , it should run long enough to prime the pump. You need to investigate the fuse blowing issue, something is probably connected incorrectly.

Sure you have the pipes on the right way on the mechanical pump? The fat 8mm pipe is the inlet and the skinnier 6mm pipe is the outlet. From my experience it doesn't take long for fuel to reach the pump, even if it has been left to drain back to the tank.

Dump some fuel in the carb to get it running and it will probably start sucking fuel up

You all probably think im a retard for these " where does this go threads " but Im trying my best and have never really worked on m10s before, or any engine myself for that matter
This plastic circular piece has a thick hose coming directly out of it and a thinner way longer hose coming out the top
There is also a thin hose coming out of the carb which is not connected to anything....Should the thin piece of this hose connect to the carb? Where does the fat bit go??

The short hose fits onto a stub underneath the base of the air cleaner. The thin vacuum hose from the plastic valve will go to a vacuum port on the carb and the other carb vacuum pipe that is flailing about will go to the vacuum can on the distributor.
Surely you can get a wiring / vacuum diagram or pics from some E21 weirdo on the other forums or are the losers too busy working on their gape ?

You really have no clue Pete - The E21 forum gets like 4 posts on it a week. Sellers take like 6 months to reply to adverts. Its fucking dead.pacerpete wrote:The short hose fits onto a stub underneath the base of the air cleaner. Are you sure the pump is actually working?
Bearing in mind fire safety etc, you could fill a small bottle with fuel, mark the level, make a short bit of inlet hose and sit the bottle in the engine bay. When you crank it you'd hope the level goes down.

My Fiat twin cam had a mechanical fuel pump. If left for a few days, it wouldn't start, and I would have to pour some fuel down the Weber carb chokes, or alternatively, spray carb/brake cleaner or 'Start Ya Bastard' down it while cranking the engine over.
It may well take a few attempts before the pump will kick into action...
Used to drive me nuts, so I sold it - electric pumps FTW!

We fucked around and realised the pump was fucked, so we swapped that and the distributor and now it has fuel and a spark. It has loads of fuel and actually fires flames out the pipe. Unfortunately it will still not start. Any ideas?

If it was a recent running engine, why did you swap the distributor ?
If the distributor was not put back in EXACTLY the same place with the rotor in EXACTLY the same position, the timing will be out hence back fires and flames
There is a mark on the lip of the distributor body that the rotor has to line up with when the engine is timed up on cylinder one. If this is done, the engine will run but you will need a timing light to set it correctly. It can be got 'near enough' for the purpose of running it up by SLOWLY moving the distributor, while the car is idling, until it runs best .
Some freak / weirdo on here must have some M10 schematics / diagrams /info they can send you ?
PS It's all Ravs fault, the dirty nautical type !

I have to agree with Pete, it sounds like you've put the distributor back in the wrong place. Also, remember that E30 M10 distributors run counter-clockwise and all other M10's run clockwise (I think).

IIRC all '80 onwards 1800 M10 distributors run the same way, e21 or E30. Foooking scrap !

Fair enough. My understanding was that it changed with the E30 but you probably know more than me.

The other distributor was changed by my dad for some wierd reason, a lot of the connectors wernt applicable etc cos of the e30 having an ecu so wev put the simple one bac on.
Anyway, we have realised that 2 of the leads were on wrong so wev put them on the right way however now the carb is fucking swimming, so im leaving it to evaporate and try up before i retry. The accelerator cable also snapped while I was at it so il need to buy a new one from work tomorrow
I fucking suck at cars
