The bottom line is it depends on how and where on the car is welded and if the welds are correctly protected.
With something as intrusive as say a boot floor replacement or rear quarter panel replacement then its near impossible to protect all of the repair welds as good as the factory unless you have the whole bodyshell E coated as per factory as that covers and protects everything.
BMW's official repair procedures for rear quarter panel replacement as now to use a cold join which is essentially a bonding procedure instead of welding which increases the risk of corrosion in the future.

IMO if the Les Stannard sport sold for around £5k and was in good condition, this car with 13owner is not worth the asking price.
If you buy a rusty turd and do the restoration at least you know what was really done. I would only buy a restored turd if the seller has taken detailed pictures of the work carried out.

The lee standard converted tech 2 sport had had welding and paint and was highish mileage iirc?Fastroad wrote:IMO if the Les Stannard sport sold for around £5k and was in good condition, this car with 13owner is not worth the asking price.
Rav is probably right, the car this thread is about is probably a turd and is well over priced if it is BUT, if its not a turd then my comments still stand regards rot free and original values.
I bit like out poor Pony. He bought a "restored" tech 1 sport for a car club member Andrew Dale and its your typical tonced up turd.Fastroad wrote:If you buy a rusty turd and do the restoration at least you know what was really done. Just read through the above BMW cold repair specification, very interesting!
It would appear from the recommendations and conclusions that the team that designed it are not that happy with it but BMW have gone ahead anyway?
What do the guys carrying out these stick on jobs think about it?

In some applications, bonding is stronger than spot welding dependant on forces applied to said join.Fozly wrote:Just read through the above BMW cold repair specification, very interesting!

It also eradicates the chances of corrosion of weld repairs happening.
I am not a body work operative but I have good friends that are experts in this field.
Here's some more info on bond vs sport weld vs weld bond.

If you scroll down there are conclusions to summerise the results.

We were ahead of our time Steve !
PS I have just bought a fully fruited 250k 124 E320 shooting break. She is going on the ramp this afternoon for an autopsy, I suspect some 'cold weld' technology may be needed

No, a malachite green 'N' plater I got wind of . Delivered to my door for £350 with rent until May and MOT until March
She has memory heated black leatherz, auto climate, cruise, electric column ,a remote Becker CD , boot load liner and more
It runs and drives suprisingly well for a 250k turd.

thats what im saying- if you have a high priced said mint blah blah sport, 2 external pics and an interior pic and a nothing special engine bay, wanting serious cash- ie the usual ebay crap ads for a joker wanting daft money like £12995 for his sport, then its no goodmagpie wrote:i'm sure most wont either with the possible damage caused through tyre kickers armed with flathead screwdrivers and crowbars .beautymeanswheels wrote:To be Honest, if i was selling my car and some one turned up and asked to take all the kit off and have interior out I wouldn't let them do it.
if i had a true minter "sport" i'd have the underskirt recent date stamped pics included ...now that's the kind of car i'd buy.
the labour of love from a true enthusiast .
prices going skywards can only mean good things
aand also no one will hand over strong money for such, or those like mentioned in this thread being baffled how their lovely car no welding blah blah only fetche 4k hanging around for ages with only 2 views- a nice detail session, nice pics, and kit off and many detailed pics in boot carpets out etc etc- would have people queing up at 6k
you just dont see them advertised like that, so presumed to be having issues, as most do, if your 7k car vastly differs from a 3 or 4k car, you really have to bother to try convey that

doesnt mean they dont or wont have any rust, being 20-25 years old
anyway, fact is there simply are if ever, any chances to ever buy such a car (325i sport) , how many have came up for sale ? looking at links on here scoured from the net, ebay, etc etc, for al the m3s, cabbys, 316 autos and whatever else, offered up low owner low milage for strong money- theres always one for sale from one of the usual suspect companies on ebay, and "sold similar required" adverts on ebay all the time/forever
how many 325i sports are/has there been , amongst the sea of others ?
youd be waiting a long time, and forking out a similar price tag to the wln car, they are much rarer than a mint low milage m3, thats for sure

As i said in a previous post in this thread, someone who knows what they are looking at doesnt need to take "the kit off and carpets out" to know weather the car is going to be a pig or not, It's pretty obvious just from looking underneath on a ramp.
That kind of thing is reserved for confirmation of how bad the rot is.
Every E30 i've looked at/worked on i've known within a couple of minutes if the car had issues or not.

yes barry we heard you, but 99% of the general public/people wanting to buy e30s are mere mortals and not god like like yourself who can tell exactly what issues car has or hasnt or if its worth 4k or 8k from 2 ebay pictures, and we are not talking about a god like yourself going to view a car, we are talking about how people advertise their cars for sale to other mere mortals

If you really think a seller is going to remove carpets and kits from mint low mileage cars just to please tyre kickers like yourself then you are more deluded than i thought.
And i never said i could tell if a car was mint or not by looking at two ebay pics. I said within a couple of minutes of actually looking at the car so don't put words in my mouth.

who said anything about mint low milage ? your the one who keeps banging on about it, ,like i said- NO MINT MILAGE SPORTS EVER EVER EVER POP UP FOR SALE ON EBAY/THE CLASSIC CAR SELLERS SITES, maybe once a year
what i am tallking about - is mr joe bloggs advertising a (NOT MINT LOW MILAGE) sport, that he wants 7-10k for and says is nice mint blah blah, and a couple of half arsed pictures of it just looking ok-nice, against a 3 or 4k sport, that also looks ok-nice- and how mr joe average buyer percieves that
in a market filled with buyers, who may just want a sport, and not know f**kall about e30s and maybe just want one

The thread started about the optimistic price of and advertised car and the general higher pricing of sports these days with some constructive posts about the difference between nice original low mileage cars and restored cars then you come wading in with the "as he ad is carpets up yet" that you always bang on about these days.
Something which you got all shirty about when it was suggested you did that to your car as people knew there would be issues with yours.
All from a few pics on the web as well!
