fronts 205/50/16. U might get tramiling with 215's
rears correct width would be 245/55 area. But i'm not sure the rear arches would take a tyre that width tbh. So maybe as Jimmy says a 235/225 width slight stretch jobbie. Maybe a 225/45/16 this would mantain a the speedo etc too

205/50/16 Fronts was the plan. It's the rear that bothers me
I've just been to my local tyre shop and he told me 245 is right width but 235 is the minimum he'd go. But I've read on the zone somewhere that someone is running 215's
I might just risk the 225/45/16's
I currently have a 60/40 drop, thanks to the H+R cup kit.
Anyone else got any ideas/comments?
Is that with arch mods?Simon13 wrote:yeah it will probably rub on the rear! mine does with 16x8 with 225/45/16
The problem is that 225mm isn't even 9 inches and 235mm is just over. I think i'm gonna need 235/40/16's
BTW when people do arch mods, is it just the lip that they do or is it more than that?
im pretty sure twiggy is planning 215x45s when his borbets come

good stuff chu, none of this stretched tyre gayness. My car has no arch mods offset is et28 only rubs on full boot at the front bottom of the arch on the m-tech kit. So no tyre damage just a funny noise now and then.
can take 2 passengers and me. But no real loads in the boot no more.
I think when folks get there arches done they either flare them out more, or just roll the lip up on the front part of the arch

i've not heard of 235/40/16 before, 225/45/16 or 245/40/16 should be fine depending on if you want stretched euro look or just wide-ass mean look.
i don't think 225/45/16 is 'dangerous' (maybe if you took it on track and stuff you wouldn't want it, there is clearly going to be less play in the tyres...) so you could go with either. I'd go for 245/40/16 and arch mods
oh i think 245 is probably the correct width for a 9 inch rim. that, or 255...

I had no option but to put 215's on my 9" rears. I tried 225's but they scrubbed badly and this was WITH major arch work.
It depends what offset they are because you might have more clearance if they are a different offset. My rears were ET15 and the fronts were ET20

Because in England we have not fully converted to the metric system. Like we still use miles, but then we use litres. We got a bit mixed up when it came to wheels and done half metric/half imperialMrDazzle wrote:Will someone please explain why wheels come in inches but tyres come in mil?
Thank you.
On a more serious note I think when they tried to change fully to metric for whatever reason they wasn't accepted. I do believe BMW tried them with the 5 series and failed.
As for the tyres, i've been saying 225's all day and now Adam's threw a spanners in my works! Especially because the wheels I want are ET15 rear and ET20 front.
And one more thing: My tyre fitting guy reckons he won't be able to inflate the 215's if he puts them on. Use of a cheater would be needed, and there isn't one that he knows of in Leicester.

Nothing to do with England, mate. The same the world over.
Metric diameter rims are for special runflat tyres. Got a set of E30 metric bottlecaps here somewhere.

i think you will get away with 225/40 on the back, with arch lips folded in. 215's will go on, but real strtech. no popping or anything.chu346 wrote:Because in England we have not fully converted to the metric system. ive just got my borbet b's ordered and they are 9J, the guy at the wheel shop said to acheive that euro stretched look the tyres to go for would be 215/40/16 and he said they would be perfect and stretch just nice over the rims! i think personally if you go any wider your gonna get problems dude! 55's would rub like a bitch and 225 and above would fill up the rear arch way to much, 215/40/16's are the ones you want

The tyre shop had problems inflating my 215's also but they managed it in the end (somehow).chu346 wrote: As for the tyres, i've been saying 225's all day and now Adam's threw a spanners in my works! Especially because the wheels I want are ET15 rear and ET20 front.![]()

I wouldn't go any bigger than 215/40/16 if you're going 9" on the back. Even with that combo you're bound to get some rubbing issues without arch work with the offsets you're looking at.

Ive never had a car on 17's so in that respect I cant compare.
As for rubbing and ride height, the car is on koni adj dampening shocks and standard mtec springs. At a complete guesstimate I think its lowered on the rear maybe 30-35ish and Ive no rubbing issues to be honest unless I hit a fairly large bump/ compression in which case it bottoms out due to the standard springs I feel. Front is standard mtec running gear so Ive plenty of clearance there.
Ive the h&r 60/40 kit ordered which I hope to have and have fited by saturday week so I'll see what the situation is like after that. Ive a feeling there wont be too much hassle.
p.s. had 3 in the back for a couple of hundred metre spin one night, never again, rubbed very badly. Id say forget many back seat passengers unless your going to do the archs

Yeah the e28 M535i came with metrics. They failed to be accepted because the tyres available for them were deathtraps. The motoring press described the m535i as undrivable in the wet until they put some normal rims/tyres on.chu346 wrote:

jim i had azev A's on my sport 7.5J 215/40/17 and the srcubbed slightly with a 60mm drop, if you are running a 40mm drop you will be fine, on a 60mm drop i pulled out the ginder and took about 5mm of each rear side and that sorted it, make sure you seal the arches back up though mateJimbob wrote:I would like to run 17x7.5 ET14 on the front and 17x8.5 ET15 on the rear.
Does 215/40 sound reasonable? Any problems with scrubbage perhaps..?
