From a time when bmw owned rover, and they engineered the car together.

I don't think anyone has ever said the mini was an entirely bmw vehicle

I know people who worked at long bridge at the time and designed various parts of the interior. British designed with bmws money and quality control, they knew they were into a winner which is why they kept it when they binned off the rest of mg / rover!

Its no coincidence the mini uses the same wheel pcd and centre bore as the bubble shape rover 200
cheers,

Its defo a Rover design, you only have to attempt to work on one to realise that!

Admittedly, it does look similar to the Talbot Samba. :)

The R50 Mini has a lot of BMW mechanical and electrical layout to it.

The electrical system (along with the Rover 75) is E46 based and both the Mini and 75 have Z axles ala E36/E46 although slightly different as they are FWD.

I've virtually reshelled an R50 Mini cooper and i dont think i have seen a single Rover part on one.

There's little doubt that BMW bought into Rover for the FWD technology, this early pre production shell shows just how close Rover got.It would have been a little lame with a K series engine, though!
