Why did they molest the codings so much? AFAIK there is no physical difference between the M52tu and the M54, is it to do with management tweaks Barry? Cable vs fly by wire etc?

I think early 1999-2001 e46 models had the m52 engine options the e36 had.

Why did they wait until after 2001 to introduce the M54 engine into e46?

Nope, the M52 single vanos ended with the E36, the E46 came out with the twin vanos

The E46 320i was available in Europe from 1998 with the 2.0 M52 TU.

The changes were engine management as you say but also the 2.0 went to 2.2, the 2.5 went up by 20bhp and the 2.8 went to 3.0 when the M54 replaced the M52tu.
