iv got a standard flywheel from an E30 325i....
what exactly needs to be done to it in order for it to fit/work with the M52 engine???

do I need to have it machined??

thanks

Standard left, modified right.

You dont have to take that much out to make it work with an m52. But it helps.

is the only gain from doing this purely lightening? basicly im trying to understand what has actualy been done to it so I can ask my local machiner to do it!
from what I see its just the outer edge has been reduced.
thanks for this info anyways

No. If you offer up the flywheel to the crank, you will see that the back face just fouls a couple of rear sump bolts.
Attacking the bolts with a grinder will just give enough clearance (so I've read), but it's a much more professional job to shave the flywheel, and if it's going to be machined, you may as well machine off a bit more for lightness as well.

ok thanks for that, I feel educated. think id sooner machine the flywheel too as you say its more pro and it gets lightened at same time so I can rev like a moped lol. kinda

just get the meat off to the ring gear lip. any lightening just means more gear box chatter

dont forget you need the M20 starter too not the M52 starter motor

no tweaking - you may have to mess with the gearbox mount though?

Just had mine done, He scalloped it out abit more than yours and wouldn't take it anymore. Got it from 8.4kg to 6.4kg, I'm happy with it though. Don't want too light I guess.

As long as you have about 1mm left behind the ring gear it will clear just fine. Getting it lightened is a bonus really. I would guess yours is still above 7kg

oh ok that's good then, cant realy say mine is lightened though. tried to weigh it earlier with the missus digital kitchen scales but only goes up to 3.5kg so god knows what it weighs, I just can be sure its heavyer than 3.5kg lol. oh well
