But the iS is better in other ways too - sports interior as standard, MTEC suspension and fully galvanised. cheaper on insurance and fuel for those that cant afford the real thing AND the IS lip
Whatever you say guys. The 25 IS faster. But the Hartge with a 35 is faster than that. Speed is not the argument. Its about the benefits of each. All e30's drive nice. But which would you rather have and why?
The only thing 6 Pot owners can muster is capacity and cylinders.
In every other department that motor is a relic.
I bought my iS because when I was out looking for minty E30, the best one I could find at the time was an iS. All the 6 pots were chavved out or baggy as hell.
I coud have bought any E30 on the market but went for the iS because a 48K miler in Lazer Blue and 1 old boy owner from new is where its at - that was over 14 years ago.
It drove better than any 325i, which I've also had a few of.
Its my car - which means is the best E30 - the end.
Does anyone get the impression that Ratch loves the smell of his own shit and the taste of his own semen (and no doubt others)? Never read so much narcissistic bollocks in my life as when he posts.

thats by far the worst color for the is, and definatly not where its at
okay apologies in advance for taking this into another direction but what about a e30 320is vs 325i....i've never driven a 320is, the body panels etc are not unique like the m3, however puts out more power than a 325i. whats the running costs of maintaining that sort of engine compared to the 6 pot???
At end of day its got to be down to getting the best car for the money you have, i spent ages looking and ended up buying an m40 auto lux, rattled like hell but the shell was really good, the trim was also spottless and it had a mtec kit.
Sadly the engine didnt last long, spent ages looking in to what conversion to do but ended up going m42 route as it will be cheaper to ensure the wife on it.
What ever engine you've got just enjoy it, they are cool cars.

My best mate owned a 320iS (now owned by E30 KID) and i did all the work on it during his ownership, have driven it back to back with mine, both been out together going head to head and both went to the ring in our E30's.
One occasion really sticks in my mind and that was having the A24 (a two lane twisting dual carriage way punctuated by roundabouts) to ourselves from Rusper to Dorking.
Bear in mind, his had a carbon intake and Alpha N and mine has the fabled BTB2.... there was nothing in it.

He done well to keep up with you with only 165 bhp...........

It was good car apart from the scuttle but it wasn't as good as my sports.
My first sport (a tech 1) was possibly the best e30 I owned. The C2 Motorsport cabrio was also a good car
Luckily when I sold the IS I got all my money back
Did you not fancy another Sport ?
How do you find Tech1 V Tech2 ? Any difference in performance ? Which did you prefer ? What were your other Sports like ?

At approx 700cc down on a 325i the IS is always going to feel low on power, bit like comparing apples and pears.
Add a few cc to help even it up a bit and its a different story.

You cant compare modded with standard so In the same breath Metric mechanic do a 3.2 M20 so its also a different story.
Sure i take your point and do agree with you mate, but that is at an even larger 1 litre difference, instead of comparing apples with pears were now comparing apples with melons.
C mon lets be careful now we might have the M30 boat anchor posse joining in with all this 3.2 talk, they may think were stepping on their toes!
Ok, let's be fair then and keep it to the same 300cc hike and take the m20 to 2.8 with the same parts like the MM 2.1 such as high comp pistons, a worked head and a suitable cam combined with the obligatory kind stroke crank and rods and a modded M20 would "murk" a modded M42.

Probably would but overheating and cracked heads will be a regular problem with the M20. The M42 might not be as powerful but does have better reliability especially when regularly driven hard.
The core characteristics are undeniable. ..
Does anyone have the standard trim power to weight ratios?
I have better things to do than argue over whose £800 turd is nearly as fast as a diesel Golf
BUT I will add that whilst the M20 is hardly hewn from granite, the M42 is positively a chocolate teapot by comparison. Profile gaskets / cracked heads and timing chain dramas, it is not a question of if but when.

EXACTLY!
There seems to be some misguided myth that M42's are more reliable than M20's!
As long as the M20 gets correct periodic maintenance they will do 250k miles + with ease.
They dont just crack their heads for no reason, its down to poor maintenance.
I think i can count on 1 finger the amount of M42's i seen with that kind of mileage without major repairs.
You also forgot excessive end float on the M42 Pete.
