Has anyone rebuilt a box, mainly to stop the layshafts rattling?

Have a mint box off my sport with 75k on it which is really quiet but my other sport box is attached to my m50 and sounds dreadful. Going to swap them out but I wouldn't mind rebuilding the bad one as a spare. So what's involved?

Usually, alot of time-consuming and fiddly replacing of worn out cogs, synchromeshes, layshaft bearings, and gaskets:

I took a broken gearbox apart once, and it remains in bits in a box in the garage! :snigger:

me too and i then took it to a GB specialist and they saw it was a Getrag and started getting all hessitant, they said they are a pig to work on...but they tried.....but couldn't fix the problem it had.

might be cheaper to buy another ??

I have another minter, just wouldn't mind getting this one up to scratch as a spare.

I forget the members name (it was on the old runboard forum), but a guy had a box rebuilt and it still grumbled at idle. I was going to get mine done but didn't bother after reading the guys thread... My box still grumbles but is still going strong some 10years later.

My good one is pretty quiet. The one on my car sounds so bad I thought the bottom end had gone until I dipped the clutch! I think the fact the box is solid mounted really isn't helping things either, reverberates through the shell.

I guess I'll just swap them and keep this one in the spares pile just in case.

Im going to get mine rebuilt - was going to do it myself but after reading thru whats involved I realized:

1) Im too stupid to do it.

2) Im just smart enough not to do it.

Rough estimate is about 950-1100£.

Oddly enough, just about what I paid for my 318iS... :?
