Anyone do an ABS delete? If you have, do you have any pics of your setup?

just remove the pump and reroute the exit pump pipes back to the master cylinder and take the abs light bulb out of the dash clusters,

Unless you remove every trace of the system, including all wiring and sensors, leaving only the toothed rings on the wheel bearings, you are leaving yourself open to a MOT test fail.

i would argue the toss with the mot inspector over this .Brianmoooore wrote:Unless you remove every trace of the system, including all wiring and sensors, leaving only the toothed rings on the wheel bearings, you are leaving yourself open to a MOT test fail.
all he will see is abs sensors if the wires were chopped back out of sight and isolated .then the abs sensors and ring gear could have been fitted later for whatever reason .

This is the relevant text in the tester's manual:"If an ABS or ESC system has been intentionally rendered inoperative, the whole system must be removed. However, this does not apply to sensor rings or other ABS components which are an integral part of another component e.g. brake disc or drive shaft."

I'd have to question why you'd bother. it was a relaible system, and a good one.

Easy job, your brake master cylinder will probably have a blank in one of the rear ports, you need to pipe it to one of the front brakes along with the other rear port on the cylinder.
The single port at the front feeds the rear, and is simply routed to the valve below on the side of the chassis
Wiring is straight forward too, if you have the early separate loom you can remove the whole ABS section with little effort, or just remove the power cable

I should have mentioned its a 1991 318iS...So loom would be the newer one... I have a pic of my MC..DanThe wrote:Easy job, your brake master cylinder will probably have a blank in one of the rear ports, you need to pipe it to one of the front brakes along with the other rear port on the cylinder.

So on the bottom that is the rear blanked port..Got it... Ive seen this set up with the rear port pipe to a splitter like this...

Is that a decent setup too? Also, would the purchase of a brake balancer for the rear be required? Im thinking it would be a good idea...

If your m/c has a blanked off port, then remove the plug and connect one of the front
brake pipes to it. If it doesn't have a blanked port, then use a tee piece, but I'd recommend a bit better workmanship than the second pic. It would look a little more professional if the tee was bolted to the inner wing or bulkhead.
Rear brake 'balancer' is the object in the second pic., right next to the tee piece.

Its not a balancer Brian, its a pressure valve, restricts fluid movement to the rear brakes below a certain pressure, I stripped one down a couple of years ago, just bumped the thread, maybe it would be better if the thread title was changed to something more relevant?

I'm aware of that, Dan. That's why I put an inverted comma each side. Didn't want to complicate the thread any further!DanThe wrote:Its not a balancer Brian, its a pressure valve, restricts fluid movement to the rear brakes below a certain pressure,

Thanks for the input guys... Ive gone and binned the abs unit so theres no turning back... The brake system on my car will be COMPLETELY overhauled during my resto so Im following the KISS principle on this one....

There's KISS and just being stupid. It's a half decent system and well worth keeping in.
Mines on a switch and is a very nice redundancy to have when I'm not concentrating 100% or say in the rain.

Im not arguing its usefullness in the least... Understand, I just bought my 23yr old e30 a couple of months ago and Ive never even driven it as the brakes were shot and in the process of being rebuilt. This car is a pure resto project for me and she's gonna be a nice summer day car once done... Removing the ABS is mostly for fun and also practical as I have to completely rebuild the brake system anyway.... I dont want to have problems with a 23 yr old ABS system once she all done...hence KISS...ross_jsy wrote:There's KISS and just being stupid. It's a half decent system and well worth keeping in.

There's nothing fun about having no ABS on a road car tbh. The system is very reliable and nothing much to go wrong with it.

Binning abs won't suddenly make a car a death trap
Its a nice extra safety net to have, but most just use it as another reason to drive like an idiot.

You clearly cant drive if you need ABS. First thing I do on any car I buy is disable the ABS and Traction Control system. I want to be in charge, not some computer thing going oh no you cant do that.ross_jsy wrote:There's nothing fun about having no ABS on a road car tbh. From factory with no ABS, spanked daily and she loves it.
Brakes are actually very good on her.

Son, p!ss off. ABS doesn't step in unless you are exceeding the limit of what you should be doing on the road. Hardly a computer interfering. If you can read you will see mine is on a switch because, in the rain, r888's don't respond well to panic braking when an idiot pulls out in front of you.GB69 wrote:You clearly cant drive if you need ABS. Now go make some more assumptions on my driving why don't you, you massive bell end. Edit, just clocked you are a driftcock, all hail our driving overlords.
Harry I haven't said anywhere it will make your car a death trap. I just fail to see why you would need to delete it on a road car, it's not like it's intrusive by any means and as you say, a nice safety feature to have.

Incorrect, when driving on snow/ice it WILL cut in all the time as soon as you touch the brakes, vastly increasing stopping distance over non ABS. ABS was invented because people cant drive, stamping on the brakes is NOT the way to brake, but you can stamp on them with ABS. ABS helps you steer while braking, it does NOT make you stop quicker, and ABS simply does not work if you lose control and end up going backwards.ross_jsy wrote:ABS doesn't step in unless you are exceeding the limit of what you should be doing on the road. I know what ABS does, thanks. Say a car pulls out, it's a natural reaction to stamp on the middle pedal. Practice all the cadence braking in the world, I would still rather have ABS sort it out on a cold morning when I might not be giving driving my 100% focus.

Brakes should be exactly the same with or without ABS. The only difference occurs when you apply enough pedal pressure to lock a wheel, and, however good a driver you are, you cannot achieve maximum retardation without the aid of ABS when one wheel is on a less grippy surface or you are forced to brake in a turn.

Ahem,,, COUGH COUGH,,,,
But, I now have a different daily car which has a much better ABS and braking system than the E30 did, so my current E30 does not have ABS, it has a big E36 airbox instead
Horses for courses....
Seeing as though everyone is sticking their oar in,,,,, I fitted ABS to my old 4 door M50 conversion in the early stages of building it, im glad I did too as it saved me from panel/paintwork several times, mostly because it was an all year round daily car and I had to do plenty of driving on ice/snow at certain times.Split_S wrote: Just looking for pics and advice, not lectures on how necessary ABS is!!
