Thinking ahead here on my 318iS restoration and Im wondering if any of you have removed the thick rubber liner on the firewall? Can it be done without bubbling the firewall paint and melting various components?

You can still buy it new from the dealers if you wanted to renew instead of remove

Not really interested in a new one - I just want to get rid of it.. Im pulling the engine shortly and want to do some clean and shine in the engine bay... Just wondering if anyone has theirs removed and if there's any negatives to this setup...

It will be fine.
The cabin might get a little warmer, and it'll be a bit noisier, but the cars not suddenly going to catch fire or anything

with the long list of other jobs to do on most e30s, removing the firewall liner, to make the engine bay prettier, is not high o the list of priority'sSplit_S wrote:Surprised not more of you have opted to remove it.... Guess you have to pull the engine out which is a bit of a PITA....

It is attached by large headed plastic clips and is easy to remove.
My cabin and bulkhead gets very hot, especially around the transmission tunnel and it's stupidly loud inside but it's a track car so don't really care.
Most people don't remove it as they don't like bodging their turds. It is fairly heavy though.
