From personal experience the following equation applies with N42 wrongness:
Valvetronic = empty pockets.
So bad an engine you can tell it was designed when BMW were in bed with Rover.
Regarding the OP's question, I don't know I'm afraid! My old one was like that on idle when a coil pack died but that resulted in it running rough and lacking power regardless of speed/rpm. You really don't want any timing chain/tensioner drama with one of these...
