It's to manually open an electric sunroof, but you need another tool kit part to make it worthwhile, AND I don't believe they were ever issued with E30s. The generic toolbox left a space for something that E30 owners think they should have but don't need.
That looks to be a 'large' toolkit, however, so it's appeal may be in its size and completeness to owners of different models.
As far as I know

If it ain't broke, fix it till it is

with it, is the long thin winder tool, that plugs in to the plastic bit, it fits in the tool box in the slot which yoiu can see in the middle of the spark plug tool, (and also sits in the hole down inside the actual spark plug tool) a long thin metal thing, which is very rare and not often seen at all, reality is youl probably never need to use them, but they are nice to have and look excellent in the tool kit, and handy to have just in case that 1 time...

Not used on e30s.
Seem to go for a small fortune on eBay to gullible people who want to fill the empty hole in the toolkit tray.

How is a random, completely useless lump of plastic which is going to spend its entire life hidden inside a toolkit inside an e30 boot a nice item.
A fifty pound note in my pocket would be a nicer item, or £50 worth of beer, or a tank of fuel.
I would get it if it was an essential part, but it has no use at all on an e30. If the gap in the multi model tray voters you that much, get it filled in properly.

Might be useful if you have an e12, e23 or e28, as you may one day be able to use it to manually wind a failed electric window mechanism.
If you have an e30 its as much use as a chocolate teapot.
Incidentally realoem still list them at $8.18, and $9 for the corresponting pin you need to use it.
Glad to hear eBay values have dropped to more sensible levels, but well done to those who used to make £50 a pop for a scrap yard freebie

Useful for quenching my thirst, plus the enjoyment if the taste. A much better use of money than a completely pointless lump of cream plasticadit wrote: i thought it was just stated what it's use was.

Andy, tbh I felt a bit sorry for him on Tuesday.
The crowd was on his back from the first whistle.
The lad lacks confidence, though to be fair he brings it on himself with
some of the ridiculous statements he has made in the past.
